In California, you can take the four independent GED subtests online or in person at one of California’s official testing centers.

Registration for the GED or HiSET test is done online. Students need to open an account on the website GED.com or hiset.org.

California uses two options for high school equivalency (HSE) testing: the GED and the HiSET exams.

HSE testing is for persons who couldn’t complete high school and offers them the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree.

Both tests measure knowledge at a level similar to that of high school seniors upon graduation. This page shows you how to get a GED in California.

The GED® is fully computerized; a paper version is not available anymore. Taking the GED test online has become a growing trend, and students can use our free online GED California classes and practice tests to prepare efficiently for the actual test.

The HiSET® exam has separate reading and writing tests, so five in total, that can be taken on a computer or on paper.

You can also take the HiSET exam online. Read more below. The HiSET and GED subtests may be taken individually and in any order.

Your diploma makes you eligible for job advancement or a well-paying job, and you will also qualify for the military and for a great college education.

California GED Testing Requirements

  • The minimum age in California is 17, but when you are 17, you must meet additional requirements. 17-year-olds must be within 60 days of turning 18 and have been officially withdrawn from the public or private school system for at least 60 days. Underage testers may also qualify if they hold a letter from the military, a college or university, or a prospective employer requesting permission to take the GED test.
  • California requires applicants to be state residents.
  • In California, state residency is required.
  • You won’t receive your diploma before your 18th birthday, and if you request, you’ll receive a letter stating that your diploma is withheld until that date.
  • You must not have graduated from high school and not be registered for another education program.
  • You don’t have to take a practice test in order to be able to sit for the HiSET or GED exam.
  • If you sit for the GED exam online, however, you are required to first attain likely to pass (“green”) scores on the GED Ready test.

Your GED diploma gives you the right to apply for college-level academic courses in all states.

You can retest a subject twice without a waiting period. After you have taken a subtest 3 times, there is a 60-day waiting period before you can retake that subject test again. When writing the test at a test center, you’ll receive two discounted retakes. When taking the test online, you will NOT have discounted retakes!

California GED Prep Classes

Remember that you can always get your GED California certificate, which has the same value as a High School diploma. Completing the GED exam will increase not only your income potential, but it is also your access ticket to institutions of higher education.

You can get all set by studying online, or you can choose to attend a traditional GED or HiSET prep class near you. Click on your city or a city near you to see all the available prep locations in your area.

Today, there is no doubt that obtaining a high school diploma or a high school equivalent diploma (GED) is not only helpful but required for most employment possibilities, as well.

If you quit high school and don’t earn your HSE credential, your salary will be almost 50% lower than a graduate student’s income, on average! If you leave high school without a diploma and don’t take any action, your chances for a quality life are considerably lower.

GED, HiSET Scoring

GED test scoring is as follows:

  • Below passing score: 100-144
  • Passing score (high school equivalency): 145-164
  • College-ready score: 165-174
  • College-ready score plus up to 10 college credit hours: 175-200

The HiSET passing score is 8 (out of 20) on each of the 5 subtests. You must score at least 2 out of 6 on your essay, and your total result must be at least 45 points, excluding your essay.

Online Testing

To qualify for taking the GED in California online from the comfort of your home, you need to score in the “green” zone on the GED Ready official practice test. The five separate subtests of the HiSET exam can be taken at home as well via an online proctored method.

HiSET vs GED

The GED includes four individual subtests (modules) that can be completed separately. The four tests are in these fields: math, science, social studies, and literacy. The price of the GED in California is $164 for the entire battery of four separate tests. Retesting a GED subtest is $41 per subject, but you get two retakes at a reduced rate that can be taken within one year.

GED testing is done exclusively on a computer. Before you register for any of the options, make sure you become as prepared as can be!

The HiSET is also modular and contains five subtests (the Language Arts section has separate reading and writing tests) that are available both on a computer and in a paper-based format.

The California HiSET test cost is $12.75 per module (computer-based) or $17 per module (paper-based). There is a California administrative fee of $20, and test center fees may also apply. The HiSET exam costs around $100 for each full battery, but, as said, extra test center fees may apply.

Please note that reduced GED retesting fees do not apply to online testing.

How to Get a GED in California

If you are really serious about getting your HSE diploma, locate your nearest GED California prep site or follow a good online GED course. Find out at a testing site near you which exam (GED or HiSET) they use and check examination dates.

Be sure to find out about the cost and application deadline policy, as that may vary. Get optimally prepared. You will be able to find all sorts of preparation materials at your local bookstores, and there are also many facilities close to you where (often free) GED classes are available (see the list above).

Californians additionally had one more option to prove knowledge and skills at a high school graduation level: passing the state’s CHSPE (California High School Proficiency Exam). This option was, however, discontinued.

How to get a GED in California?

To get a GED in California, you need to pass the four tests of the GED test or the five tests of the HiSET exam.

California uses two options to earn the state’s high school equivalency diploma: the computer-based GED exam and the HiSET, which is available on paper and on a computer.

What are the California GED testing requirements?

The GED and HiSET exams are only for people who didn’t finish high school. In California, test-takers must be state residents and at least 17 years old, though, for 17-year-olds, additional requirements apply. Successful test-takers won’t receive their diploma until they’ve reached their 18th birthday.

What is the GED cost in California?
