California has welcomed the all-new GED exam for its High School Equivalency (HSE) program. The GED has four subtests on Literacy, Math, Science, and Social studies, that can be taken separately. Scores count for two years from registration.

Multiple HSE tests

California also introduced two alternative exams (the HiSET and TASC) that are offered both on paper and on a computer. These tests come with five subject fields (writing and reading are separate). Modular testing does not apply to the TASC and HiSET.For qualification information check GED in California, and you may also benefit from our free practice tests for your GED exam.

The GED passing score was lowered

If you’re looking for news regarding the lowered GED pass score (it was brought down in January 2016 from 150 to 145 points), please visit this GED News page. TASC and HiSET have their own scoring methods. The HSE tests are for adults who never finished high school and offer them another opportunity to acquire a diploma that is equivalent to a regular high school diploma.

The GED-TASC-HiSET diploma

Upon successful completion of the California high school equivalency exam, you will receive the High School Equivalency diploma which is regarded equivalent to a high school diploma by virtually all employers, government institutions, universities, and colleges. Each testing center can decide about what testing system(s) it provides, so contact the center near you for details.

Who can take the HSE exam?

For California adults who did not complete high school, the HSE (High School Equivalency) program offers a great opportunity to get a diploma that allows for higher education and leads to better employment opportunities. When you pass the GED, HiSET, or TASC exam, you will receive the High School Equivalency Certificate. Please contact a testing site close to you as they can decide which of the three testing programs they are using.

The 4 GED tests

The tests are offered many times per year at many testing centers all across the state and are available in English, Spanish or French. The four GED subject tests are the same in every state: Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math. TASC and HiSET have two separate Literacy tests on writing and reading, so five in total.

GED cost & registration

The California GED set of four GED tests costs $150 for all four tests ($37.50 per test). HiSET and TASC are cheaper. Upon registration you pay for only the test(s) you are going to take, you can prepare for and take one test every time you feel you are ready. Once you are ready to take a test, don’t forget to bring a valid Identity Card! This is a must every time you are taking up a test.

Go to GED.com for every thinkable detail and learn that the GED program is a whole lot more than just a group of tests. If you set your account with MyGED you will discover a wealth of information regarding preparation, testing, test scheduling, how to change or cancel appointments, penalties if you don’t show up, school profiles, employment development and possibilities and more.
