Four Separate GED Tests
The GED has four subtests on
- Language Arts
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
These four sub-exams can be taken separately and in any order.
The HiSET comes with five subject fields (individual writing and reading tests) that are also available separately.
HiSET and GED testing takes place at a level similar to what high school students are expected to know upon graduation.
GED testing is done entirely computer-based, while the HiSET exam can be taken on paper or a computer.

GED and HiSET Online Testing
The GED and HiSET exams are also offered over the Internet. In the past, there was no online GED or HiSET test option. You needed to show up at a state-designated testing center and take the tests in person.
Well, that changed a few years ago, and today, the GED and HiSET exams are available in an online proctored format as well.

If you want to qualify for the online GED exam, you first need to reach ‘green’ scores (in the passing range) on the GED Ready test, GED Testing Service’s official practice test.
There’s one of these tests for each GED sub-exam, so that’s four in total, and they cost $7.99 on the GED.com website, for a total of $32.
