The GED has four independent subtests (modules) assessing academic proficiency in
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
- English Language
These sub-exams may be completed one (or more) at a time and in any order you like.
The HiSET exam includes five tests (separate reading and writing tests) that can also be taken separately.

The GED – For Who is it?
The GED (General Education Development) exam is intended for grownups who have never finished high school and who want to take a second shot at getting a comparable diploma.
The certificate that you will receive once you successfully complete the California GED test is accepted all over the country as equivalent to a high school diploma by state and federal official institutions, business employers, and colleges.
HiSET and GED
The GED exam, like the HiSET, checks fundamental competencies that students learn in high school, and the subjects addressed in GED preparation classes include math, science, language arts (writing and reading), and social studies.
The HiSET exam is somewhat cheaper than the GED and is offered in both paper and computer formats, whereas the GED set of four tests is only available on a computer.
The HiSET exam includes five testing fields as the language section is separated into two individual writing and reading subtests.
