GED adjusted scoring

Good news for GED test takers. The passing standards for the GED tests were recently (early 2016) brought back by five points down to 145 instead of the earlier 150. The passing standard appeared to have been set too high. More information can be found in our GED News posts.

What is the GED exam

The most recent edition of the GED examination is a set of four individual tests that measure your proficiency and level of academic knowledge skills at a level comparable to that of graduating high school seniors. Upon successful completion of all four subtests, you will be awarded the GED diploma which is regarded all over America as equivalent to a high school diploma.

The GED – what’s new

From January 2014 on, the GED exam is entirely computer-formatted. The new edition of the GED exam has four tests instead of five as had the former version. The tests include questions that vary in difficulty and come as multiple choice, short answer, and essay-style forms. The four tests cover a wide variety of interdisciplinary subject areas: Math, Science, Social Studies, and Literacy.

GED registration and information

The new GED requires applicants to have an email address, a major credit/debit card, and registration and exam-scheduling must be done online via GED.com and when you sign up with the online portal MyGED you can schedule your tests online and receive all sorts of great information on schools, their programs, and employment options and developments. Applicants who don’t have a credit card can buy a voucher at the Oxnard Adult School office.

At registration and also at testing, applicants must present a current government-issued photo-ID, and they must be at least 18 years old and have a secondary education degree, or be engaged in another school program. Testing fees will not be forfeited if test-takers reschedule their tests at least one week (five working days) prior to their test date. Accommodations are available for persons with disabilities but require verification and timely approval.

The GED exam fee

In the state of California, the fee for the GED exam is $35 per test ($140 for the entire battery) and re-takes can be available at reduced fees, just check this online at GED.com or inquire at a GED testing site.

Is online testing possible?

No, online GED testing is not possible. You will have to come to one of California’s official testing sites (also for HiSET and TASC testing) and take the tests in person, and remember, your identity will be controlled, so bring current and valid identification. If you come across an internet site that states something else, you know you deal with fraud, there is NO online testing and so-called “online GED diplomas” are worthless! Online preparation is fine though and free GED video classes are available on this website as well!

TASC and HiSET alternatives

These exams are cheaper than the new GED exam, have five instead of four separate tests (the section ‘Literacy’ is cut up in two tests on reading and on writing), and are available on both paper and computer (until 2016) while the new GED exam is only offered on computer.
