More HSE testing options

California also allowed two alternative and cheaper HSE (high school equivalency) exams, the TASC and the HiSET, in lieu of the GED exam. These two alternatives are offered both on a computer and on paper, Testing sites can decide by themselves which exam(s) they will be using, so please contact a testing site near you for details.

New passing score

The GED exam covers fundamental subject areas that high school students must command upon graduation, The GED exam has four sub-tests on the subject fields of Literacy, Social Studies, Math, and Science. The GED passing score was adjusted to 145 (down from 150) in January 2016. GED Requirements in California

For who is the GED?

The GED program is set up for individuals who did not finish high school and gives them one more possibility to obtain a similar diploma of equivalent value. After passing the GED exam you will be given a diploma that is recognized as equivalent to a normal high school diploma and is accepted nationwide by employers and institutions of higher education.

No online HSE testing

The GED exam is done on a computer, but test-taking can only be done at an official testing center, the GED (or HiSET or TASC) exam is NOT available online, and webites with different information are fraudulent. Check also our free practice tests for your GED exam.

GED alternatives TASC and HiSET

Besides the new GED exam, California also provides two alternative testing programs for its residents, the TASC and the HiSET examinations. These two alternatives offer besides computer-based tests also paper-based testing and will also lead to the High School Equivalency Diploma.

Eligibility requirements

Today, the GED program serves adults from all walks of life, helping numerous adults each year to attain personal goals, get better jobs, and start a college education. Applicants must be residents of California, be at least 18 yrs. or older (or be within 60 days of their 18th birthday), not be enrolled in another school program, and not already hold a secondary education degree. Exceptions exist for 17-year olds, so please seek advice from your nearest test center.

*) Red Bluff Adult Education Center

GED testing is now also possible in Red Bluff. Tehama County’s Department of Education indicated that the Adult Education Center in Red Bluff is now a designated testing site where applicants can take the four GED subtests. Students can take one test at a time if they wish, and scores count for two years. Holding the GED diploma allows for a college education or get better-paying jobs and career change. The GED diploma is seen as equivalent to a high school diploma.
