GED Classes Long Beach, California

Listed in this post are all GED® prep facilities and testing sites in the Long Beach, California, region.

California has not only embraced the all-new computer-based GED test, the state additionally offers the two available alternatives HiSET and TASC for high school equivalency (HSE) testing.

Modular GED

The GED exam contains four separate tests in the fields of literacy, social studies, math, and science that need to be taken on a computer. The GED is modular meaning you can take one test (module) at a time. Results are valid for two years. HiSET and TASC have five tests (literacy is split up in a reading and a writing test), are not modular, and are available both paper-based and computer-formatted.

Lowered GED passing score

The GED passing score was lowered from 150 to 145 per individual sub-test in early 2016, and all relevant information is provided on our GED News pages. TASC and HiSET have different methods for scoring. Go to GED-HiSET-TASC in California to see if you qualify, and check out also our free practice tests for your GED exam.

GED Requirements in California

What is the GED?

The new GED (General Education Development) exam is created to give adults who don’t have a high school diploma another chance to obtain a comparable diploma. The certification that you are given when you successfully complete the California GED tests is well-accepted as equivalent to a high school diploma and recognized by U.S. government agencies, businesses, and universities.

The GED exam assesses general knowledge that students must have when completing high school. There is no need to take all four tests/modules in a row. You can now prepare (and pay) for one section, pass that test, and move ahead to the next subject field. A great improvement compared to the old GED exams.

GED preparation

Do not come to sit for the GED exam unless you are totally prepared. Check out the listing of prep facilities above, or get books from the local library or bookstore. If you are a disciplined person, studying over the internet is a good option, so check our post on online GED courses, but do get prepared!

GED and the economy

Lack of a secondary education degree (high school diploma or GED certificate) is keeping a lot of people from getting a (better) job. You also need that degree to enter college or university. If you will get the GED certificate you will surely be finding a well-paying job (there are millions of vacant jobs that require a High School diploma or similar), and if you want to keep on studying, or get into the Military, you cannot do without it. Get properly prepared to secure your important GED diploma.

Can I take the GED (or TASC-HiSET) online?

The GED testing system has completely changed in 2014, the pencil and paper GED is no more, and the exam is now offered only on a computer, but you still CANNOT take the GED exam over the internet. Beware that there are hundreds of websites that offer high school diplomas, GED credentials, and other related things. What they don’t tell you, though, is that their so-called “accredited degrees” are worthless. These sites only want to make a quick buck, and at your expense! So GED, TASC, and HiSET are just NOT available over the internet!

*) ABC Adult School

Prior to registration for the official GED exam, it is advisable that applicants sign up for a GED prep class. ABC Adult School offers such a program, and all applicants must attend a registration session where they will be assessed in reading, math, and writing skills so the school can come up with a personalized study plan.

The Learning Center offers a variety of options for GED preparation: textbook-based studying, multimedia DVD education, and interactive computer study options. The school has many committed and experienced instructional aides who are trained to give adult education classes. GED students can work towards the four tests (or only one, if they want) at their own pace, and they can attend classes according to their personal schedules.
