GED Requirements in California

Who is the GED exam for?

HSE (high school equivalency) preparation classes (GED/HiSET/TASC) will make sure that you will come to an official testing site properly prepared. The GED (General Education Development) test, and also the HiSET and the TASC, are for individuals who don’t have a secondary education degree and would like to obtain a comparable diploma.

When you complete the California GED test successfully you will be awarded a certification that is acknowledged at the same level as a high school degree, and virtually all US employers, government bodies, and academic institutions accept the certificate as a similar diploma. Use our video lessons, a great and fast way to get all geared up for the real thing.

GED alternatives TASC and HiSET

The TASC and HiSET include five tests on the subject areas of writing, reading, math, social studies, and science. These exams are offered in both paper- and computer-based formats, and are cheaper than the GED exam. Be aware that testing centers have the freedom to offer one or more of the options, so contact a site near you for details.

GED scores

The range of scores on each GED exam is 100 to 200, and the GED passing score is 145 to 200. This was brought down from 150 in March 2016. Learn more in our GED news pages. You see that your total needed from the four tests to pass the GED exam is at least 580.
100-144: below-passing score
145-164: passing score (high school equivalency)
165-174: college-ready score
175-200: college-ready plus credit score

GED timed tests

The four tests of the GED exam are on:

  • Reasoning through Language Arts: 155 minutes (In Spanish: 147 minutes)
  • Mathematical Reasoning: 120 minutes
  • Social Studies: 90 minutes
  • Science: 90 minutes

You can take (and pay for) one test at a time within a 2-year period of time. HiSET and TASC use different scoring methods.

GED registration

You need to register online at GED.com where you create your GED account at MyGED. You are required to have a valid email address and you need to use a password to be able to access your GED account. Remember that the name you use is identical to that on your photo ID, and you need a credit or debit card for payments. In California, the GED cost is $35 per module ($140 for the complete exam), and you can take one test at a time if you wish.

Online GED testing?

The GED test can only be taken at official Testing Centers (e.g. San Mateo Adult School). Websites that indicate something else are fraudulent, so please beware. Online-acquired documents are worthless and will not be accepted by schools or employers. ‘Digitalized’ testing has a few important advantages, and within three hours of completion of a test you will receive your test results, and you have the option to take all 4 tests at once (if you can find a test center that can handle that) or just 1 test. Testing scores are valid for two years from your first registration. The HSE examination is available in Spanish and English.

GED and the economy

In the USA there are 4.1 million vacant jobs that for the greater part can’t be filled mainly there just are not enough people with an HS or GED diploma. At the same time, we can also see some 40 million adults who did not end four years of high school.

Nowadays, a secondary education degree is wanted for practically any kind of work, and the enormous shortfall of sufficiently educated candidates for all these vacant jobs has a huge negative effect on the economy. If you can secure your HSE diploma, you for sure can get one of the vacant positions. Your income will be better, your family will have a better life, and the economy will be helped, too. Put your first step on the road to a better future and go get your HSE diploma.
