This is a complete overview of GED® prep locations and test centers in the San Jose, California, area.
California is using the computer-based GED exam for the state’s high school equivalency (HSE) program.
Additionally, California has welcomed two other HSE exams, the TASC and the HiSET.
The HSE program gives adults who quit high school prematurely the chance to get hold of a degree that’s equivalent to a common HS diploma.
The GED exam comes with four separate tests (modules) in Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies. You may complete these modules in maximally two years.
The alternatives HiSET and TASC include five non-modular tests as the Literacy Sections come with separate language reading and language writing tests.
The GED is administered exclusively on a computer while the HiSET and TASC are offered in both a computerized and paper-based version.
To see if you qualify, go to GED in California, and you may also benefit from these free practice tests for your HSE exam.
The HSE diploma qualifies for a college education and will surely result in far better (paying) employment options.
In early 2016, the GED passing score was adjusted from 10 to 145. Read more on this GED News page. HiSET and TASC are scored in different ways.

Is the HSE exam available online?
The answer is no. The GED exam is not available online, and if a website offers the GED exam or the GED diploma via the internet, that site is false. In order to take the exam, you must go to a designated testing center. This also applies to the TASC and HiSET. No problem with online prep courses, but testing must be done at a designated testing site. Completing the GED exam successfully will open up doors to colleges and universities, and greatly improve options for better earnings and new job opportunities.
GED-TASC-HiSET
Besides the new GED exam offers California also two nationally accredited alternative assessment programs for high school equivalency testing: the TASC and the HiSET exams. Testing centers can decide for themselves which one (or more) of the three exams they will use, so contact a test center near you before you start preparing (though the content of all exams is rather similar). You are welcome to take advantage of our HSE video prep program.
GED – what’s new
For all sorts of information about the latest edition of the GED program, you best go to the GED organization’s website: GED.com. There you will be asked to make your account at MyGED. This way you will learn how to register and schedule your exams, and you will be offered great school and academic program descriptions, and job trends, developments, and possibilities.
GED passing score
The new GED exam comes with a new scoring table. The results are measured on a scale 100 to 200, and you must attain a score of at least 145 points on every one of the four tests. This score was lowered at the beginning of 2016, and you can read all about it here.
*) Campbell Adult and Community Education
Campbell Adult and Community Education (CACE) offers GED prep classes providing adults with the chance to prepare for GED exam’s four tests. The school’s courses include textbook assignments, computer-aided training, video instruction, online learning, and both personalized and class interactions geared towards improving a student’s test-taking competencies, career building, and academic proficiency. CACE students are required to create a personal learning plan to help achieve personal, educational, and professional goals.
Campbell Adult and Community Education is accredited by WASC (The Western Association of Schools and Colleges). All new applicants will be assessed in an orientation session, and those interested should make an appointment (See above). The school’s GED prep classes support applicants in attaining the knowledge and academic skills required to take and pass the four tests of the GED examination.
These classes include all textbook assignments, computer-based classes, video instruction, as well as individual and class-based activities directed towards improving test-taking skills on the four subjects of the new GED exam: Science, Math, Social Studies, and Literacy.
The school’s Integrated Basic Education & Skills Training (IBEST) program is created to assist applicants in their efforts to boost their reading, writing and math competencies prior to preparing for the actual GED exam. The school also offers GED prep classes in Spanish on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
**) Foothill College
Foothill College is not a GED preparation facility, but if you think of continuing your academic education, perhaps in combination with earning your GED diploma in the region (at Santa Clara or Mountain View-Los Altos Ad. Education, at Sunnyvale-Cupertino Adult & Community Education, or at the Palo Alto Adult School), Foothill College can be the address. The school provides top academic, career, and support programs to get your career to the next level.
***) Mission College Career Ctr – Academic Support Study Center
Mission College Career Ctr – Academic Support Study Center ( Main Building S2-401 and S2-201). The center provides tutoring for most of Mission College’s courses. Assistance is available throughout the year, you can just drop-in, make an appointment, and group tutoring is also offered.
The Study Center provides academic support and strategies to be successful with homework, tests, and projects, and it is a great help to develop computer literacy skills, to enhance students’ reading, writing, grammar, and math proficiency and provides ESL (English as a second language) classes as well.
