GED Classes Los Angeles, California

Posted in this article is an overview of all GED® preparatory class locations and testing sites in the Los Angeles, California, region.

California has introduced the all-new GED® exam to measure high school equivalent knowledge of its residents, so be sure to get well-prepared to complete the new GED exam successfully. You can take one of the four independent GED subtests (modules) at a time and test results count for two years from your first registration.

GED scoring

The GED pass score was at the beginning of 2016 reduced to 145 points per individual test (down from 150). All relevant details can be found in this GED News article. HiSET and TASC are scored in different ways. For eligibility details go to GED California, and you can very well benefit from our free practice tests for your GED exam.

Alternatives TASC and HiSET

The new GED exam includes four tests in these academic subjects: Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies. Besides the new GED, California residents can also take the new alternatives, the TASC and the HiSET tests, but testing sites decide which exam(s) they are using, so contact a test center close to you. The HSE (high school equivalency) diploma is accepted by practically all U.S. schools and employers.

GED Requirements in California

GED acceptance

The GED (General Education Development) program (and also the alternatives HiSET and TASC) supports adults without a high school diploma to earn a credential that is equivalent to a regular high school diploma. The diploma will improve their employment prospects and allows for continued education at institutions of higher education.

GED passing score

The new GED program came with a new scoring system as well. You were required to produce a score of at least 150 (on a scale 100-200) to pass that sub-test, but in early 2016 that was adjusted downwards to 145 points. Studies had indicated that the norm was set too high in relation to what graduating high school seniors are expected to command. Read more here.

One GED test at a time

You can prepare for and schedule one of the four sub-tests (modules) at a time. When you’re all set for one subject field, take that test and if you pass, you can move on to the next part. Your scores count for two years from your first registration.

Online testing is NO option

Please be aware that the GED, TASC, and HiSET exams are not available online. You must appear in person at an official testing site and take the tests in person. Websites that have a different story are run by con artists. There is NO online high school equivalency testing. Online-bought documents have no value and will definitely not be accepted by schools or employers!

GED alternatives TASC and HiSET

California also lets its residents (or rather the test centers) the option to take another high school equivalency assessment and has welcomed the TASC and the HiSET examinations. These two alternatives are also available on paper (while the new GED exam is only available computer-based), and they are much cheaper than the new GED exam.

TASC and HiSET include five tests as the Literacy section is split up in a reading and a writing test. The HiSET is scored on a 1-20 scale and you must attain at least 8 points on each of the five tests. You essay score cannot be less than 2 (out of 6) and your grand total needs to be in the 45-100 range.

The TASC is scored as follows: The maximum attainable score on each of the five tests is 800, and you need to come to no less than 500 points (so at least 2500 overall). On the essay section, you must score at least two points (out of 8).
