In Minnesota, students aiming to earn their GED diploma can take the four GED subtests online or at one of Minnesota’s GED test centers.

To register for the GED exam, students need to create an account on the GED.com website.

Minnesota offers the computer-based GED® test to adults wishing to obtain a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma. The GED test gives persons who never completed high school the opportunity to get hold of an equivalent degree.

Free GED Testing in Minnesota

For a limited time, first-time test-takers in Minnesota can take the GED test for free. Applicants must have a current Minnesota address or take the four subtests at a Minnesota testing site while living in a border town.

Minnesota GED Requirements

Minnesotans without a high school degree may earn a GED credential if they pass the four tests that make up the GED exam.

• The minimum age in Minnesota to qualify for GED testing is 17.
• Applicants 17 and 18 years old must, however, meet additional strict criteria.
• Underage test-takers need to be, for example, officially withdrawn from high school and submit an Age Waiver Form.
• You don’t need to be a Minnesota resident.
• You are not required to first take the GED Ready® practice test unless you take the exam online.
• You don’t have a high school or equivalent diploma.
• You can also not be registered for another education program.

Minnesota GED Cost

The regular Minnesota GED exam costs $144 for the entire battery or $36 per individual sub-exam if you sit for the exam at an official Minnesota GED test center.

If you take the exam online, the cost per sub-exam is also $36 or $144 for the full exam. To qualify for online testing, however, you must attain “green” (likely to pass) scores on the official GED Ready test. There are four GED Ready tests (1 per subject exam at $6.99 each), so that will cost you an additional $28!

GED Retesting

When you fail a GED subtest, you can take two retests at a reduced rate of $10 for the test center. After a year, this offer is void, and standard fees apply again.

If you fail a subtest, there is no wait time before you can retake that subject test, but when you’ve taken that test three times, you’ll have to wait 60 days before you can try again. The above does not apply to that Online Proctored GED exam!

Minnesota Online GED Test

The GED exam is now also available over the Internet. It used to be that to earn a GED diploma, you had to appear at an official Minnesota GED test center and take the four subtests in person, but that has changed!
