GED Classes Minneapolis, Minnesota

In this post, we list all GED® prep locations and testing sites in the Minneapolis region.

Minnesota uses the computer-based GED exam for high school equivalency (HSE) testing.

The GED exam is a set of four separate tests developed for people who never finished high school.

This way, they can earn an equivalent degree. Testing is done at a level that compares to that of graduating HS seniors.

The exam has four individual subtests in Literacy, Social Studies, Math, and Science. The four tests must be passed within two years.

Online GED testing is not possible. You must show up at a state-approved testing center in person.

Can I join the army with a GED?

The GED exam

After passing the Minnesota GED exam you will receive the Minnesota GED Certificate, which is recognized as equivalent to a high school diploma by virtually all employers, government agencies, and colleges and universities all across the United States. Go to GED test requirements in Minnesota for eligibility requirements.

The GED tests are offered in English and Spanish, and accommodations are readily available. The four GED tests are scored on a 100 – 200 scale and the passing score is 145. At the beginning of 2016, this was lowered from 150 because studies had shown that it was set at a too high level. Now GED scoring is as follows:

100-144: Below passing score
145-164: Passing (high school equivalency) score
165-174: College Ready score
175-200: College Ready plus college credit score

What’s the GED like

The GED exam includes not so many multiple choice questions anymore. Instead, math comes with quadratic equations and interactive topics like polynomials. Social Studies will not be confined to comprehension but will lean more towards critical thinking. At the beginning of 2016, the GED passing requirements were adjusted to 145 on each subtest. Read more in this GED Pass Score News Page.

There are four separate tests (Science, Social Studies, Math, and Literacy) that must be completed in two years. Every test is computer-based, no more paper-based testing, and test takers can see their results right away except for the essay part.

No online GED test

Note that the GED tests cannot be taken online. Websites that say so are false, the tests must be taken at an official GED test center. Online-obtained diplomas are totally worthless and will never be accepted by educational institutions or employers. You can take the four tests (modules) separately within a 2-year time frame. Here is a link to all U.S. GED test locations and prep sites.

GED preparation

The GED is pretty challenging, and preparation has become more important than ever before. Bookstores and libraries can provide study material, and online courses may also be a great solution. In Minnesota, students must first pass the state’s HSE (high school equivalency) practice test.

GED cost

In Minnesota, the cost of the GED exam is $120 for all four tests ($30 per subject). In total, you have around seven hours to complete the exam, but you have the liberty to take one test when you feel sufficiently prepared, and you only pay for that part. Scores count for two years from initial registration.

In case you are not showing up for your test or when you are too late, the fee is gone. However, if you make a change and reschedule the test in time (at least 24 hours prior to the exam) you will not be penalized.

Literacy (Reasoning through Language Arts) will take around 2.5 hours to complete, Mathematics around 1 hour and 55 minutes, and for the Science and Social Studies sections, you will have 90 and 70 minutes respectively.

Minnesota requires you are at least 19 years old. When you are younger you need an Age Waiver, which you can obtain at Minnesota’s Department of Education (online).
