GED in Wisconsin

Wisconsin is using the GED® exam for its high school equivalency (HSE) testing program. HSE testing gives adults who didn’t complete high school the opportunity to acquire a degree that’s equivalent to a high school credential.

The GED test is entirely computer-based and has four independent subtests in Math, Science, Literacy, and Social Studies.

there are numerous locations in Wisconsin where GED prep programs are available to get all set to take the GED exam confidently.

The GED is modular meaning you have the option to take one subtest (or module) at a time.

To take the GED exam, you had to show up in person at a GED test center, as the GED test was not available online. That has now changed, however, with the introduction of an online GED testing option. Read more below.

Online preparation is a great option, especially for students in remote areas.

On this page, we list all GED prep facilities and test centers in Wisconsin. Just click on a city near you to discover all your options.

Wisconsin GED requirements

In Wisconsin, the minimum GED testing age is 18.5 though younger applicants (17 to 18.5 years old) may also qualify if they meet some pretty strict requirements.

Underage GED applicants must, for example, have permission from their school board and a parent or guardian. Please check with a test center.

The Wisconsin GED testing fee is $135 for all four subject tests ($33,75 per module, read more below).

GED test-takers must be Wisconsin residents but taking the GED Ready® practice test first is not required.

In Wisconsin, GED testers must also take and pass a Civics Test that contains 100 questions. Please check with a test center for details.

Applicants cannot already hold a high school diploma and cannot be registered for any other educational program.

Introducing the GED exam online

GED testing was not possible over the internet. Students that wanted to acquire a GED diploma needed to show up at an official Wisconsin GED test facility and sit for the exam in person. That has now changed with the introduction of an online version of the GED exam. Check our post online proctored GED testing for more details.

GED price and retests

As said above, the GED price tag in Wisconsin is $33.75 for each of the four separate GED subtests or $135 in total. You have the option to register and sit for the subtests one at a time.

If you fail one of the Wisconsin GED subtests, you need to wait at least 10 days before you can take that subject test again and after two retakes, the waiting period is 60 days. You can take any one of the subtests as often as you wish.

The first two retests are offered at $10 for the test center fee but this offer counts for one year after which regular fees will apply again.

How to start

The GED program is not for everyone. You cannot register for this program if you already hold a high school diploma or when you are signed up for another school program. When you feel you are ready to take the GED route, remember these guidelines to get ahead.

First of all, locate a GED prep facility near you and see if you are eligible for the GED program. Learn about the regulations and costs involved. Find out about all the possible details to avoid disappointment.

Make sure you’re well prepared when you sit for the GED exam. Local bookstores and libraries can help you with booklets and other materials, and you can find several good online courses as well such as the practice test and video lessons provided by this website.

Probably the best way to prepare is to attend one of the many (mostly free of charge) GED prep classes offered at facilities close to you in combination with an online GED prep course. So prepare well, pass the four GED tests, and get your GED diploma.

Your future

In Wisconsin, 11% of all adults 25 years or older do not have a secondary education degree (high school diploma or equivalent). Every year, some 10,000 of these individuals decide to go for their high school equivalency diploma (HSED) or GED certificate (General Educational Development).

The four testing areas of the GED exam are Language Arts (2 hours and 35 minutes), Math (1 hour and 55 minutes), Science (1 hour and 30 minutes), and Social Studies (1 hour and 10 minutes).

If you want to earn a GED diploma or HSED in Wisconsin, there are specific requirements you must meet: You must be at least 18,5 years old (students ages 17 to 18,5 may only be served by a school district or special program).

You must demonstrate proof that you have resided in Wisconsin for no less than 10 days, and you must complete an application form and pay a testing and credential fee at the first meeting. Don’t also forget to check our post on signing up for the GED exam with MyGED.

Free GED online prep in Wisconsin

The latest version of the GED program is really more than only a set of four tests. The online portal MyGED (on the website GED.com) offers all sorts of preparation and study tools. This is the online location for signing up and scheduling your test appointments. This is also the location to check your test results and there is a lot of information about employment possibilities and college education. The portal MyGED is flexible and very convenient.

The four GED tests

The four GED modules assess knowledge and skills in the academic fields of Literacy (Reasoning through Language Arts), Science, Social Studies, and Math (Mathematical Reasoning). Scoring takes place on a 100-200 measuring scale and goes as follows:
Below passing: 100 – 144
High school equivalency: 145 – 164
College-ready: 165 – 174
College-ready plus up to 10 college credits: 175 – 200

Continue your education

The GED program helps adults who did not complete high school by giving them the chance to obtain a diploma that holds the same stature as a regular high school degree. Obtaining the GED diploma is important because it will lead to better employment options and it opens doors to colleges and universities.

GED acceptance

After you’ve passed the four independent GED tests, you will be awarded the GED diploma. This document is recognized and accepted all across America by government agencies, employers, and colleges and universities as the equivalency to a standard high school diploma. To summarize, you can sit for the GED test if you haven’t finished high school and do not take part in another education program.

Contact one of the above-listed GED prep centers for details and this website also provides tons of information and free online GED video lessons and practice tests. Check out these free video lessons as they are a great way to get all set fast!
