In Michigan, students can take the GED exam in an online format or at one of Michigan’s official GED testing facilities.
BestGEDClasses offers free support through free GED online classes and practice tests. To take the exams, candidates must register at GED.com or hiset.ets.org.
Michigan uses two options for High School Equivalency testing: the GED and HiSET exams.
The GED® is fully computerized, whereas the HiSET® is offered both on paper and on-computer. The HiSET exam is also offered online.
The exams give persons without a high school diploma a chance to acquire an equivalent degree.
You can find hundreds of locations all over the state where GED and/or HiSET prep classes are organized.
These prep classes will assist you in becoming all set to successfully sit for Michigan’s High School Equivalency exam.

Michigan GED Testing Requirements
- The minimum age to qualify for GED or HiSET testing is 16.
- For applicants 16 and 17 years of age, however, restrictions apply, so contact a testing site for details.
- There is NO Michigan residency requirement.
- There is no requirement to first take the GED Ready® practice test or another practice test, except when you take the online GED test.
- Applicants cannot already hold a high school or equivalent credential.
- Applicants cannot be enrolled in another education program.
Michigan GED Cost
The Michigan GED exam fee is $174 for all 4 tests ($43.50 per subject field) when taken at one of Michigan’s test centers. If you take the online GED exam, each subtest costs the same.
To qualify for online GED testing, you’ll have to attain a “green” (likely-to-pass) score on the GED Ready practice test. There are four GED Ready tests (one for each subject test and you can buy them at GED.com for $6.99 each. So that adds another $28 to your total online GED testing cost!
Michigan HiSET Cost
The Michigan HiSET exam costs $118.75 for the entire 5-test exam when taken on a computer or $133 for all subjects if you take the exam in a paper-based format. These prices count for both on-site and online testing.
In case you fail one of the GED subtests, there is no waiting period in Michigan to take that test again, but when you fail that subtest 3 times, a waiting period of 60 days applies.
The first two GED retakes will set you back just $10 each (for the test center fee), but you’ll have to take them within one year; otherwise, the original fees will apply again. This does NOT apply to online testing.
The high school equivalency program is crucial for adults who did not finish their high school education. It offers them one more chance to acquire an equivalent diploma. Obtaining the Michigan GED diploma will enhance their employment prospects and open up doors to a college education.

GED And HiSET – Who Qualifies
Not everybody can sign up for the HSE (High School Equivalency) program. If you already have a high school diploma or if you are registered for another school program, you will not be allowed to take the HSE exam. You need to be at least 18 years old, though 16/17-year-olds may qualify if they meet specific requirements.
Online GED And HiSET Testing
Today, students can also take the HiSET or GED exam online. In the past, the tests were exclusively available at official test centers, but that has now changed.
You can learn more about the online proctored HiSET exam in this post: The online HiSET test, and for information about the online proctored GED exam, check out this post: The online GED exam.
Michigan GED Price Tag
As said above, the cost of the Michigan GED exam is $43.50 per subject, so a total of $174 for all four tests, regardless of whether you sit for the exam online at a Michigan test center. You can register and pay for one subject at a time. Retesting is $10 for each subject (up to two times per subject; after that, regular fees apply again). These retakes at this reduced rate must be completed within one year. After that, the full price must be paid again. This does NOT apply to online testing!
So the Online Proctored (OP) GED exam costs $43.50 per subtest as well, so $174 overall. It used to be that online testing was more expensive but that difference has disappeared. You can, however, add an additional $28 because you are required to purchase four GED Ready tests (one for each subject) and attain a “green” (likely to pass) score before you are allowed to take the test online. That totals $202!
Registration for the GED exam has become very easy! Simply sign up via GED.com or call 1-877-392-6433. Registration doesn’t mean you need to schedule an exam; you do that only when you feel you are ready to do so. The HiSET subtests can also be taken separately and are slightly cheaper than the GED. The video lessons and practice tests available on this website are courtesy of Onsego GED Prep, a premium course recognized by GED Testing Service.
HiSET Cost
We mentioned already that the five HiSET subtests will set you back $118,75 in Michigan. The cost structure is as follows: the first computer-based test costs $48.75 ($10.75 for ETS, $8 for the test center, and a 1-time state administration fee of $30). Each additional computer-based subtest is $18.75 ($10.75 for ETS and an $8 fee for the test center).
The first paper-based subtest will cost you $53 ($15 for ETS and an $8 fee for the test center, and a 1-time state administration fee of $30). Each additional paper-based HiSET subtest costs $23 ($15 for the ETS fee and an $8 test center fee).
You will get two retests per subject test at the reduced rate of $8 (test center fee), but you’ll have to take these retests within one year, or there’ll be a new annual state registration fee of $30. and original testing fees will apply again.
So the Michigan HiSET will set you back $118.75 for the computer-based test or 133 for the paper-based test. It doesn’t matter whether you take the HiSET exam online or at a test center, though the paper-based version is only offered at testing sites.
How To Prepare For The GED Test
When you feel you are ready to go the GED path, remember these guidelines and get ahead: get in touch with a GED preparation site close to you and find out if you qualify to take the exam. If you do so, check testing dates and eventual fees, as they may vary. Check all requirements and regulations at your local test center, and sign up for a prep class.
Community bookstores and libraries can also supply all kinds of materials, and there are many online GED prep courses as well. So whichever way you prefer to study, be sure to show up at the exam well-prepared, pass the exam, and get your HSE test diploma.

GED Registration
The GED program is more than just a series of four tests. Go to GED.com, and you can create your account with MyGED, an online portal to prepare and study for the GED exam; here, you can sign up and schedule your appointments to sit for the exam.
It also allows you to see your test results, and the program provides you with a lot of information about job options and college education. MyGED is highly flexible and convenient and gives you the support you will need to pass the GED exam and hands you the tools to take control of your life and future.
Four Timed GED Tests
A few years back, the GED exam was revamped to make sure that it measures what colleges and employers expect of candidates. The four content areas are Reasoning Through Language Arts (2 hours, 35 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (2 hours, 15 minutes), Science (1 hour, 30 minutes), and Social Studies (1 hour, 10 minutes). The exam is entirely computer-based and offered in English and Spanish.
You have the option to take one module (subtest) at a time. This counts for both the GED and HiSET exam. The HiSET exam includes five subtests in Language Reading, Language Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science and is scored differently than the GED. On the HiSET, your minimally required overall score is 45 out of 100, and on each module, the minimum score is 8 out of 20. Your essay result must be 2 or higher out of 6.
GED Scoring
The four GED sub-exams are scored on a 100 to 200 scale. The passing score on each subject test is 145. So there are four scoring ranges. 100-144 = below passing; 145-164 = high school equivalency range; 165-174 = college-ready range; 175-200 = college-ready + college credit range.

FAQ About GED In Michigan
How to get a GED in Michigan?
To earn your HSE (High School Equivalency) diploma in Michigan, you must either pass four GED subtests or five HiSET subtests. Michigan uses two alternative options for students looking to earn their HSE diploma: the fully computer-based GED or the HiSET exam, which is offered both on paper and in a computer-based format.
What are the Michigan GED testing requirements?
Both the GED and HiSET are for people without a high school diploma. In Michigan, the exams are open to non-residents as well. The minimally required age is 16, but for test-takers 16 and 17 years old, additional criteria apply. There’s no need to first attend a prep course or reach satisfactory results on a practice test.
What is the GED cost in Michigan?
In Michigan, the GED exam will set you back $174 for the whole battery (or $43.5o for each subtest) if you take the exam at a GED testing site or online. Online testers are also required to purchase four GED Ready tests ($28 overall) and attain passing scores before they can take the four GED tests online.
The Michigan HiSET exam costs $118.75 (computer-based) or $133 (paper-based). You can take and pay for one (or more) of the four GED or five HiSET subtests at a time.
