What’s on the GED and HiSET Exams

The GED test includes four independent subtests in the academic fields of

• English Language Literacy
• Social Studies
• Math
• Science

The four GED subtests (modules) can be taken one at a time and in any order. There’s no need to prepare for and take everything in one session.

The HiSET exam includes individual Writing and Reading tests, so five overall, which can also be taken separately.

Both options measure knowledge and skills at the level that may be expected of graduating high school seniors.

The GED is entirely computer-based, whereas the HiSET can be taken both on paper and on a computer.

Online GED and HiSET Testing

In earlier times, online HiSET or GED testing was not an option. You were required to go to one of Michigan’s testing sites.

Well, a few years ago, that changed with the advent of the online GED and HiSET exams.

To qualify for taking the GED exam online, you’ll first need to reach passing results (‘green’ scores) on the official practice test from GED Testing Service, GED Ready. These tests can be purchased at GED.com for $7.99.

There are four GED Ready tests to pass (one for each GED sub-exam), so that’s four in total, adding $32 to the total Michigan testing costs.
