GED passing score
In January 2014, the latest version of the GED program was rolled out across America, and the passing score was set at 150 on a 100-200 scale. It appeared that GED graduates were outperforming their high school peers increasingly and that the bar was raised too high initially. So in early 2016, it was decided that the passing needed to be lowered from 150 to 145.
100-144: Below Passing Score
145-164: Passing Score (High School Equivalency)
165-174: College Ready Score
175-200: College Ready Plus College Credit Score

Please contact a GED prep center close to you to discover if you qualify and to learn all about other regulations. On this website, you can also find quite a few articles that contain relevant information.

What is new
The Maryland GED exam is entirely computer-based. “Digitalization” has made many things of the GED test easier, but you still have to go to a GED testing site for the examination. Registration can be done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flexible scheduling is available and you have as well the opportunity for testing at your own pace. You can take (and pay for) one of the four modules (sub-tests) at a time. From registration, scores count for two years. Another advantage is that score reports are instantly available except for the language section.
The four GED subtests
Because the GED exam comes with fewer multiple choice questions than before, more essay-style answering is required, so an applicant’s writing skills can be assessed through all other testing fields. So the GED exam has four sub-tests in these fields: Reasoning through Language Arts (literacy), Mathematical Reasoning (Math). Science, and Social Studies.
One GED subtest at a time
No longer is there a need to take the four tests in one session. Within a period of two years, you now need to complete the four subtests (modules).
GED cost in Maryland
In Maryland, the cost for the entire series of four tests is $45.00 ($11.25 per section). For registration and more information go to GED.com. Up to two retests are free of charge. You must be a resident of Maryland and the test is offered in English and Spanish (except writing) on a computer. Test takers in Maryland MUST take the writing section of Language Arts in English.
No online GED testing
You cannot take the GED tests online, you still need to show up at an official Maryland testing site in person. After completion of the GED test, you are awarded the GED diploma that is nationwide regarded as the equivalent of a standard high school diploma by virtually every government agency, all recruiters and employers, and all universities and colleges. Don’t forget to check our article about signing up for your GED exam with the online portal MyGED.
Jobs with a GED
If you want to land a well-paying job in Maryland, the best thing to do is investing your time in a great education, and in case you never completed high school, you have an outstanding opportunity to boost your career options and improve our earnings by taking on the GED examination.
Holding the GED credential will result in more money and you will feel more valued as a worker. During the last few years, the state of Maryland saw an annual increase of more than 5,100 jobs in the Health Care and Education sectors, while Financial Services and Business sectors added another 7,200 new jobs to the Maryland employment market.
These new jobs mostly required qualified entry-level workers (HS or GED diploma needed), and this development is continuing, so if you want to benefit from these new jobs that come with good pay and great benefits, and that definitely will get you a more satisfying way of life, go get your GED diploma as soon as you can. The future will be yours!
The adjusted GED passing score
The passing score is 145 points per subtest. GED Testing Service reduced the minimum score from 150 to 145 in January 2016. Note that taking the GED test online is NOT possible. You must appear in person at a state-approved testing site.
