The GED test contains four individual subtests that you can sit for separately. The four testing fields are:

Maryland GED Requirements

• In Maryland, the minimum age to qualify for GED testing is 16.
• 16, 17, and 18-year-olds, however, will have to meet extra requirements. They must, for example, be officially withdrawn from school and have permission from a parent or guardian. Please check with your nearest GED test site.
• The Maryland GED exam is only for state residents.
• You do NOT first need to take the GED Ready® practice test (only when you take the exam at a test center), and Maryland doesn’t require you to take adult education lessons, though it is advised to become properly prepared.
• You cannot already hold a high school credential and also not be attending any other school program.

In Maryland, the GED testing fee is $57 for all four subtests (computer-based) for first-time testers, thanks to government subsidies (so individual subtests cost $14.25 each). This applies only to first-time testers and both online and on-site testing.

The regular fee is $36 per subject test or $144 for the entire 4-test GED battery.

If you fail a GED subtest, there is no wait time in Maryland before you can retake that test, but you are restricted to three retests per calendar year.

If you take the online GED test, you also pay $14.25 per subject for the first attempt in Maryland; otherwise, the test fee is $36 per subject test.

Keep in mind that GED or high school degree holders make over $9,600 more annually than people without a secondary education degree.

Who Can Take the GED?

The GED program is not for everyone. You cannot have a high school diploma and cannot be registered for a school program. Please contact a GED prep center close to you to discover if you qualify and to learn all about other regulations that may apply.

How to Prepare for the GED Test

If you have the feeling that you are ready to go on the GED test path, think of the following guidelines to get ahead: Contact a GED adult education or another prep site near you and check out if you actually qualify but in general, adult students who never finished their high school education qualify if they are 16 or over.

So, show up prepared for the GED exam, pass the exam, and get your GED credential. GED Passing Score

The GED passing score is 145 on a scale that runs from 100 to 200.

• 100-144: Below Passing Score
• 145-164: Passing Score (High School Equivalency)
• 165-174: College Ready Score
• 175-200: College Ready Plus College Credit Score

The Maryland GED exam is entirely computer-based. “Digitalization” has made many things about the GED test easier. Registration, for example, can be done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Flexible scheduling is available, and you have the opportunity to test at your own pace. You can take (and pay for) one of the four modules (sub-tests) at a time. Another advantage is that score reports are instantly available except for the language (essay) section.

The Four GED Subtests

Because the GED exam comes with fewer multiple-choice questions than before, more essay-style answering is required, so an applicant’s writing skills can be assessed through all other testing fields.

GED Cost in Maryland

In Maryland, the cost for the entire series of four tests is $57.00 ($14.25 per section) for first-time attempts. The regular fee is $36 per subject test, so $144 in total (read more below). This applies to both online and on-site testing.

To qualify for online GED testing, however, you first need to reach “likely to pass” (green) scores on the GED Ready® test. There are four GED Ready tests, one for each subject, that cost $6.99 each, so that’ll be another $28 on top of your regular testing costs.
