GED Classes Chicago, Illinois

Last Updated on April 10, 2024.

This article lists all GED class locations and test centers in the Chicago area. Illinois offers two options for high school equivalency testing: the HiSET and GED exams.

Best GED Classes offers free GED online classes and practice tests that will help you get started on your prep journey for both exams, and they let you discover if an online prep course is a good option for you. Our free support does not offer complete GED or HiSET coverage.

If this approach appeals to you, we suggest you register with the full-scope, accredited GED prep course designed by Onsego Online GED Prep. As only one of twenty online programs, Onsego was awarded the “100% GED Test Aligned” predicate by GED Testing Service.

The GED and HiSET can be taken online or at state-certified testing centers. Read more below about online testing.

The exams give adults who never graduated high school the chance to obtain an equivalent diploma.

GED® testing must be done computer-based, while the HiSET® exam can be taken on paper or on a computer.

GED testing is done through four independent, modular tests in these academic fields:

  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Language Arts

You can take one of the four GED subtests (modules) at a time and in any desired order.

The HiSET exam has individual writing and reading tests, so five in total, which can also be taken separately.

The GED is fully computer-based, while the HiSET is available on paper and on a computer.

In Illinois, test takers must also pass the state’s Constitution exam if they want to earn their HSE (High School Equivalency) diplomas.

Online GED and HiSET Testing

Until recently, taking the High School Equivalency Test over the Internet was not possible. It was simply not available online. To get hold of a GED diploma, you needed to show up at one of Illinois’ state-designated testing sites.

Well, that has changed! GED and HiSET testing is now also possible online with the use of an online proctor. For more detailed information, go to these pages: The online GED test,’ and for HiSET information, ‘The online HiSET test.’

Illinois now offers GED Testing For Free

The Community College Board of Illinois announced that they will pay for the GED test. Test-takers can use the code ILSAVE when paying for the test.
