It doesn’t matter when you left school.
Both tests are available online and at official Illinois testing centers. Check below for information about online HiSET® and GED® testing.
The tests give individuals who could not graduate high school the chance to earn an equivalent degree.
The GED has four separate subtests in Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies that may be completed one at a time.
The HiSET exam has individual reading and writing tests (so five in total) that can also be taken separately.
In Illinois, applicants also need to take and pass the U.S. Constitution exam to earn their HSE (High School Equivalency) diploma.

Introducing Online GED And HiSET Testing
Until recently, taking the HiSET or GED exam over the internet was impossible. The tests were just not offered online. If you wished to earn your high school equivalency degree, you needed to come to an official Illinois test center and sit for the tests in person.
But now, that has all changed as the GED and HiSET exams have introduced online versions using an online proctor. For more detailed information, go to these posts: ‘The online GED test,’ and for more information on the online HiSET exam, go to -> ‘The online HiSET exam.’
Joliet Junior College
The school offers classes to prepare students for the GED or HiSET exam and also helps ESL (English as a Second Language) students with transitioning into GED/HiSET prep classes. The classes provide individualized instruction based on each student’s unique needs.
Classes include college & career preparation, organizational, time management, and study skills and are available in daytime and nighttime settings at all JJC campuses and at a number of other sites throughout the JJC’s service area.
The school’s courses help students review their skills while preparing for taking the exams, job qualifications, or college-level placement testing. The school also provides transition assistance for students preparing for certification programs, college classes, job training, or academic bridge programs.
The school’s HiSET/GED prep classes are free and targeted toward adult learners aged 16 years and older who are not enrolled in a school program. All applicants must first complete an “Orientation & Placement Session of some 3.5 hours. This includes testing for an appropriate placement, goal-setting instruction, and registration. Students can select class times and locations that meet their schedules.
