It doesn’t matter when you left school.
The GED® exam is completely computerized, while the HiSET® can be taken on a computer or on paper.
The exams offer individuals who left high school prematurely the chance to earn an equivalent degree.
Testing happens at a level similar to what is expected of HS seniors upon graduation.
The GED is modular. You have the liberty to take one subtest (module) at a time.
The HiSET has five subtests that can be taken separately as well. This option has separate writing and reading tests.
In Illinois, GED test-takers must additionally pass the state’s Constitution exam.

Online GED, HiSET Tests Introduced
Until recently, online HiSET or GED testing was not possible. It was simply not offered. If you wished to earn your Illinois high school equivalency degree, you needed to come to an official Illinois testing site and sit for the tests in person.
Well, now that has changed. The GED and HiSET exams have introduced online versions of the exams using an online proctor. For detailed information, check out these pages: ‘The Online GED Test’ and ‘Online HiSET-At-Home Testing.’
