It doesn’t matter when you left school.
The exams offer people who didn’t graduate high school an extra opportunity to earn an equivalent credential.
GED® testing occurs through four subtests that measure a candidate’s knowledge of these academic subjects:
- Language
- Social Studies
- Science
- Math
You have the option to deal with these subtests one (or more) at a time and in your preferred order.
The HiSET exam has separate reading and writing tests, so they have five tests. These subtests can be taken separately as well.

Online Proctored GED and HiSET Tests
Taking the GED or HiSET exam over the Internet was not an option. That is, until recently! If you now want to earn your GED or HiSET credential, you no longer have to come to an official Illinois testing site if you qualify for online testing.
So it all has changed. The GED and HiSET exams are now also available online with the use of a proctor. For more detailed GED information, go to -> The online GED exam, and for more information about the HiSET exam, go to -> The online HiSET exam.
