It doesn’t matter when you left school.

The exams give adults who left high school prematurely the opportunity to acquire an equivalent credential.

The GED® exam is a fully computer-based set of four independent subject tests in Literacy, Math, Social Studies, and Science.

You can take one of the four GED subtests (or modules) at a time.

The HiSET® has two literacy tests (writing and reading), so five in total, that are also available separately.

Test takers in Illinois must also take and pass the Illinois Constitution exam.

Online GED, HiSET Testing

Taking the GED or HiSET exam online was, until very recently, not an option. The tests were simply not offered online. To take the exams, you were required to come to an official testing site.

However, that is changing! The GED and HiSET exams have introduced online test formats using a proctor. To learn more about the online GED exam, check out ‘The online proctored GED test,’ and for more HiSET information, go to ‘The HiSET-at-Home test.’

Prepare Well

Both the HiSET and GED are challenging tests, and getting well prepared is your key to success. Though in Illinois, there’s no requirement to take a prep course or the official GED Ready Test prior to taking the exam, decent preparation is absolutely recommended.
