The Four Modular GED Sub-exams
The GED has four independent, modular subtests that assess proficiency in the academic areas of
- Math
- Language
- Science
- Social Studies
You can write these modules separately and in the order you want. The HiSET exam has individual writing and reading subtests, so five overall, which you can also take separately.
The HiSET exam comes with on-paper and on-computer formats, whereas the GED is done exclusively on a computer. Testing takes place at a level comparable to that of graduating high school students.
In Illinois, GED applicants must also take and pass the state’s Constitution exam to receive their diplomas. The state of Illinois gives regular high school diplomas to successful GED and HiSET test-takers, and the GED is now offered at no cost.

Online GED and HiSET Exams
Taking the GED or HiSET exam in an online format was impossible in the past. There was just no high school equivalency test over the Internet. If you were looking to acquire the HSE diploma, your personal appearance at one of Illinois’ state-approved testing sites was required.
Now, that has all changed as both the HiSET and the GED exams have launched online versions. An online proctor will monitor if everything is done in line with strict regulations. To learn more, check out the following articles: introducing the online proctored GED exam, and for more information about the online HiSET test, <- check here.
To qualify for online GED testing, you must first reach passing scores (in the green range) on the GED Ready practice test. On each GED module, you must do so, making it four GED Ready tests to pass.
You can buy the GED Ready tests for $7.99 at GED.com, adding $32 to your overall GED testing cost. Students registered with an Advantage Plan from Onsego don’t have to buy the GED Ready tests. Their plans already include four vouchers for the GED Ready test at no cost. Isn’t this a wonderful $32 value bonus?
