Using a Prepaid Card
Using a prepaid debit card is actually a very convenient way to pay bills or make purchases, but many prepaid cards come with some pretty high fees.
But American Express has partnered with Walmart to offer the American Express Bluebird card that gives you access to your cash but without extra costs.
You can use the American Express Bluebird card virtually at any location where American Express services are accepted. Additionally, you’ll have ATM access for free at almost 25,000 MoneyPass locations across the globe.
Your Bluebird account allows you to send and receive money in a hassle-free way, and the account also allows you to get your paycheck faster.
To prepare for the GED test fast, we advise using the accredited Onsego GED Prep Course. Our free lessons and practice tests are from Onsego, and if this study method is what you like, register at Onsego.com.
Let’s Take a Closer Look at Bluebird
The American Express Bluebird Prepaid Card is not a checking account, though it comes with lots of similar features. The main difference between these two, however, is the fee structure.
So let’s take a closer look at some reasons why setting up an American Express Bluebird account (and earning your GED) is worth considering:
- Simple account management – With the Bluebird mobile app, you can pay bills, add funds to your account, and track your card balance on the go.
- No monthly fee – Your American Express Bluebird account doesn’t come with any monthly fees.
- No activation fee – Activating your Bluebird account is 100% free. Always!
- No foreign transaction fee – If you use your Bluebird account for international purchases, you won’t be surprised by extra fees, as American Express doesn’t charge you any foreign transaction fees.
Setting Up a Bluebird Account
Getting your GED really pays off as persons with a GED will make some $9500 more per year than those who don’t (as you can see in our calculator post), and setting up your American Express Bluebird account is quite easy, but of course, there are some prerequisites. Let’s take a look:
- To open a Bluebird account, you need to be 18 years of age or older and, in some states (Nebraska and Alabama), even at least 19 years old.
- You are required to provide your SSN (Social Security Number). The federal government requires all U.S. financial institutions to collect this sort of information. So American Express will not be checking your credit, but they will verify your identity.
- To open your Bluebird account, you need to have a current and valid email address. If you don’t, you can easily open a free email account via Gmail.
American Express, just like any other financial institution, is required to help the federal government fight illegal activities.
That’s why, upon opening your American Express Bluebird account, they are required to ask for your name, full address, date of birth, and some other information for proper identification. You may also be asked to submit a copy of an identifying document, for example, a driver’s license.
So you can upload your Bluebird account at all times at any Walmart, and you may also want to read our post about how Walmart helps its employees by funding their GED education and exams!
Paying for the GED Test with American Express Bluebird
So, this option has made paying for your GED exam a bit easier again. Even if you don’t have a major credit or debit card, you can now use the American Express Bluebird card and pay for the GED exam. Make sure, though, that your GED test appointment is in your correct time zone! If it isn’t, you can easily adjust that on the “My Schedule” page.
In most states, the full GED exam will cost you somewhere around $144, though online GED testing will cost you $24 more since you must reach passing scores on four GED Ready practice tests to qualify for online GED testing. You can learn more about the cost of the GED exam in your state here. There are states, however, where the exam is more costly, and there are also states that offer high school equivalency (GED) testing for state residents at no cost.
Bear in mind that you can take (and pay for) the four GED modules (independent subtests) one at a time. There’s no need to take the entire GED exam all at once, and you can easily add funds to your Bluebird account at every Walmart across the nation.
So now, you know how to pay for the GED test without a credit or debit card.
