Four GED Sub-exams
Testing is done through four separate subtests (modules) that can be taken separately.
The tests cover the academic fields of
- English Language Literacy
- Social Studies
- Math
- Science
The GED exam is entirely computer-based. Paper-based testing is a thing of the past. You can write the four GED sub-exams one at a time and in the order you choose.
The GED exam measures basic knowledge at a level similar to what students must command upon graduation.

Online GED Testing
In the past, to earn your GED diploma, your personal appearance at an Alabama test center was required, but that changed a few years ago.
Today, the GED test can also be taken online by eligible candidates who score in the “green” zone on the GED Ready practice test.
There are four GED Ready tests: one for each of the four GED sub-exams. Each GED Ready practice test costs $7.99 on the GED.com website, adding $32 to your overall cost.
Students with an Onsego account don’t have to buy these GED Ready tests if they learn with an Advantage Plan. These plans include four GED Ready vouchers, a great $32 bonus!
When you take the GED test at a test center, you’ll have two discounted retakes. This does not apply to online testing! More details can be found here: Introducing Online GED Testing.
