Both tests are available online and at state-certified test centers.

The GED and HiSET tests offer adults who never graduated high school the opportunity to secure an equivalent diploma.

The GED exam includes four separate tests that measure an applicant’s skills and knowledge in these academic areas:

  • Language Arts
  • Science
  • Math
  • Social Studies

There’s no need to deal with the entire GED battery all at once. The four GED subtests can be completed one test at a time.

The HiSET has five tests (Literacy has separate reading and writing tests). These tests can be taken individually, too.

Both HSE exams assess academic proficiency at a level similar to that of a graduating HS student.

In earlier times, online HiSET or GED testing was never possible. But recently, we saw the launch of both a GED and HiSET online proctored testing option. For more information, go to the bottom of this page.

Introducing GED and HiSET Online Proctored Exams

In earlier days, both the HiSET and the GED exams could not be taken online. Your personal appearance at one of Pennsylvania’s state-designated official HSE (High School Equivalency) testing centers was required. Recently, however, all of that changed as we saw the introduction of both GED and HiSET online proctored testing options.

If you want to read more about the newly introduced online HiSET exam, check out this article: ‘The online HiSET test,’ and if you want more information on the recently launched online proctored GED test, go to The online proctored GED test.’

Pennsylvania Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma

Pennsylvania’s CSSD (Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma) is the state’s equivalency credential that can be earned by Pennsylvania residents who don’t possess a secondary education degree (high school diploma).

The CSSD can be achieved by passing the four GED modular tests or the five HiSET modular tests. Applicants must be residents of Pennsylvania who are at least 16 years old and not registered for a private or public education program. Testers 18 and above can do so without any further restrictions, but underage test-takers (16 and 17 years old) must additionally meet some rather strict requirements.

Underage Requirements

Students 16 and 17 years of age need to meet the above-mentioned criteria and be officially withdrawn from their high schools, submit an Age Waiver form, and have parental consent.

They also must provide an official letter from an employer (on company letterhead) stating they need to pass an equivalency test for employment purposes, OR an official letter from a post-secondary education institution that they need to pass the exam, OR an official letter from an Army branch stating they must pass the exam for induction, OR present an official letter from a state institution where they are inmates, residents, or patients, signed by the director, that they must pass the equivalency exam.

If test-takers pass the Pennsylvania equivalency test before they’ve turned 18, they will receive a transcript. They will not receive their Pennsylvania Commonwealth Secondary School Diplomas before their 18th birthday.
