GED Classes Lancaster, Pennsylvania

This is an overview of GED®-HiSET® prep classes and testing facilities in the Lancaster area.

Pennsylvania uses two options for High School Equivalency (HSE) testing, the HiSET and the GED exams.

Pennsylvania awards the Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (CSSD) to students who pass one of these exams.

HSE testing occurs at a level that’s similar to what HS seniors must command upon graduation.

The GED is done completely computer-based whereas the HiSET can be done both on-computer and on-paper.

The GED exam has four subtests (modules) in Math, Literacy, Social Studies, and Science. You are given maximally two years to complete all four tests.

The HiSET comes with five tests (Literacy is split up into a writing and a reading test) that can be taken separately as well.

How difficult is the GED?

GED-HiSET testing

The four-test GED program has proved to be a lifeline to many high school dropouts has become tougher, and quite a few local adult education teachers were worried that all the changes to the GED tests could overwhelm the motivation of several learners, resulting in a severe setback.

The Pennsylvania CSSD (Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma) is equivalent to a regular HS diploma and will lead to far better employment possibilities and allows also for a college education. For qualification criteria go to GED-HiSET Testing in Pennsylvania.

The changes to the GED program were the biggest revision of the credentialing program after its inception over 70 years ago. The modifications have brought the GED program again line with requirements of businesses and post-secondary education. Online GED or HiSET testing is NOT possible. Websites with a different message are fraud! Getting all set via online courses is perfectly okay, though.

GED diploma & job options

More than 80 percent of all jobs require education on or above high school level, and very often a high school diploma or a GED credential just isn’t enough. The GED testing programs had to be adapted to changed employment market circumstances. Benefit also from these free practice tests for your HSE exam.

GED-HiSET passing scores

On the GED test, you must have at least 145 points on each of the four sections, so minimally 580 points in total. If you want to know more, visit the GED organization’s website GED.com, sign up with the portal MyGED and you will learn every detail of the GED program, and you will be guided through every step of the way through the world of the General Education Development. On the HiSET, students need to reach a score of at least 8 points (out of 20) for each sub-test (five in total), 2 points for their essays, and in total no less than 45 points. The GED passing standard was adjusted to 145 on each subtest. Learn more in this GED news post.

The GED structure

For many decades, the GED diploma (or high school equivalency credential) has opened up doors to good employment, college and university for millions of adults who don’t possess a high school degree. More than 18 million adults have earned a GED diploma over the years from the moment the program started in the 1940s. The American Council on Education teamed up with Pearson Vue to develop an entirely new and more rigorous GED exam that would be aligned with the Common Core standard, which is accepted by most states.

The last time the GED exam was updated was more than a decade ago and the GED test requires applicants to have at least some computer and keyboarding skills. The paper-and-pencil test system is a thing of the past, at least for the GED. The GED program is established to assist grownups in their efforts to improve their professional opportunities and to provide them access to a college education. In Pennsylvania, the HISET exam is offered as well and can be done on a computer or in a paper-based version.

GED-HiSET & the economy

In America, there are some 40 million adults who never finished high school, and the HSE program is especially intended for them and give them a second chance to obtain an equivalent diploma. Annually, over half a million persons pass the HSE exam, and you may very well be one of them.

One GED test at a time

The GED test has four tests in the academic sections of Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies, and the complete four tests are going to take 7.5 hours, but you can take one test at a time, whenever you’re sufficiently prepared (but within two years). Pennsylvania awards the Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma, and you can only take the exam at designated GED/HiSET testing sites. The five HiSET tests may also be taken separately.
