The GED and HiSET exams give them the opportunity to get ahold of an equivalent credential that’s accepted, just like a conventional high school degree.
The HiSET exam consists of five testing sections, English Reading, English Writing, Social Studies, Math, and Science. On the GED, English Writing and English Reading are combined into one Language Arts sub-exam. So there are four GED subtests.
Both exams will take you around 7.5 hours, usually divided over a couple of days. You may, however, choose to take the subtests separately, one or more at a time, and in any order.
HiSET testing can be done on a computer or in a paper-based format, whereas the GED test is fully computer-based. Both exams can be taken at certified test centers or (for qualifying candidates) in an online proctored format.
All across North America, the diploma that you’ll get upon successfully taking the GED or HiSET exam is accepted in the same way as a conventional HS degree.
