The Independent HiSET and GED Subtests

The HiSET exam consists of five independent, modular sub-exams covering:

• English Reading
• English Writing
• Social Studies
• Math
• Science

On the GED, English Writing and English Reading are combined into one Language Arts sub-exam. So, there are four GED subtests.

Both exams will take you around 7.5 hours to complete. You may, however, choose to take the subtests separately, one or more at a time, and in any order.

HiSET testing can be done on a computer or in a paper-based format, whereas the GED test is fully computer-based. Both exams can be taken at certified test centers or (for qualifying candidates) in an online proctored format.

All across North America, the diploma that you’ll get upon successfully taking the GED or HiSET exam is accepted in the same way as a conventional high school degree.

The Online GED and HiSET Tests

Both the GED and HiSET exams are available online and at official Indiana test centers.

To be able to take the GED test, however, you are required to attain “green” (passing) scores on the GED Ready practice test.

Each of the four GED subtests has a corresponding GED Ready practice test, so that’s four of these tests for a total of $32, since each GED Ready test costs $7.99.
