Four Independent GED Subtests

The GED exam consists of four separate subtests in

• English Language Literacy
• Mathematics
• Science
• Social Studies

You don’t need to take all the subtests at one time. You have the option to sit for one (or more) of the four subject tests at a time and in any order.

GED testing is quite challenging. The passing score is set at a level that some 40% of high school graduates would not be able to pass the exam on their first attempt.

GED Passing Score

To pass the GED exam, you’ll have to score at least a 145 on each of the four modules. Averaging is no option. This score is minimally required on all four modules.

Results are calibrated on a 100-200 scale. 100-144: below passing score; 145-164: high school equivalent score; 165-174: college-ready score; 175-200: college-ready score PLUS up to 10 college credits.

The Online GED Test

It used to be that you could not take the GED exam online. To secure a Minnesota GED degree, you were required to appear in person at one of Minnesota’s state-approved GED test facilities.

Some years back, however, we witnessed the introduction of the online proctored GED test, so all of that has changed. To learn more about the online GED exam, check out the post ‘The online GED test.’

Note that if you want to take the GED exam online, you must first reach ‘green’ scores on the official practice test from GED Testing Service, GED Ready.
