What’s on the HiSET and GED Tests
The HiSET exam has five subtests measuring academic proficiency in these subject fields:
- English Writing
- English Reading
- Social Studies
- Math
- Science
The GED combines reading and writing into one English Language subtest, so this exam includes four subtests.
On both exams, the subtests can, if wished, be taken one at a time and in any order. There’s no need to prepare for and take the exams in full all at once.
The diploma awarded upon successful completion of the GED or HiSET exam is equivalent to a regular high school diploma.

GED and HiSET Scoring
GED test results are calibrated on a 100-200 scale, and the passing score on each subtest is 145. Averaging is not possible.
There are three GED passing score ranges: 145-164 is the high school equivalency range; 165-174 is the college-ready range; 175-200 is the college-ready plus credit range.
The passing score on each of the five HiSET tests is 8 out of 20. Your overall result cannot be under 45, and your essay must have at least a 2-score.
Online GED and HiSET Testing
Online HiSET or GED testing was, until some years back, not an option. You were required to show up in person at one of Indiana’s state-designated test centers.
That has changed, however, with the introduction of the HiSET-At-Home exam and the Online Proctored (OP) Test. A proctor will see if you do everything in accordance with the regulations.
To qualify for online HiSET or GED testing, you’ll have to attain sufficient scores on the HiSET Official Practice Test (OPT) or the GED Ready test. Check here to read all about the -> HiSET-At-Home online testing option. For more info on the GED online test, check here.
To qualify for online GED testing, you are required to pass a GED Ready practice test for all four GED sub-exams. So, that’s four of these practice tests overall. They cost $7.99 each, so you can add $32 to your total GED testing cost.
Please note that, if you register for one of Onsego’s Advantage Plans, you will receive four GED Ready vouchers at no extra cost. That is, among more extras, included in the Advantage Plans. That’s a fine $32 value bonus, don’t you agree?
You can very well use Onsego’s GED course for your HiSET preparation since both exams have quite similar content.
Do we have to include or remove a site? Are adjustments needed? Please inform us here.
