Qualification specifics

In Florida, adult applicants 18 years and older can take the GED tests and – if they are successful – earn the GED General Education Development) diploma, the equivalency to a high school diploma. Students ages 16 and 17, who want to sit for the GED exam, will be faced with specific regulations but may follow an approved under-age GED preparation program. Applicants must not be the holders of a high school diploma or similar, and not be partaking in another school activity.

About Panama City

Panama City (population 38,000) is the seat of Bay County. Surrounded by St. Andrews Bay, the city offers a protected harbor for the facilities at the Port of Panama City complex. The city is located on Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway and offers a great variety of entertainment and cultural venues for visitors and residents.

Panama City has a very agreeable climate (temperature around 80 degrees in summer, and mostly above 50 in winter), offers many fishing and water sports opportunities as well as great arts and entertainment events, but still has a pleasant small town feel. Education plays a dominant role in the Panama City-Bay County area. The city houses Florida State University and Gulf Coast Community College. Gulf Coast offers numerous associate degree programs in Arts and Science, and also has a vast Continuing Education Program.

Florida State University’s Panama City Campus provides various undergraduate and master degree programs in fields such as education, business, nursing, and engineering. Gulf Coast and Florida State cooperate in a 2 + 2 program, meaning that Gulf Coast provides the first two years of education, and Florida State takes care of the last two years of undergraduate education resulting in a bachelor’s degree.

Troy University (situated at Tyndall Air Force Base) offers residents undergraduate degree programs in business administration & management and psychology. Troy University provides master degree education in management, public administration, human resource management, human development, and international relations.

GED passing score

The passing score for each of the four GED tests was reduced from 150 to 145 points. When the latest version of the GED test was introduced across the nation, the passing score was set at 150 on a 100-200 scale.

When GED graduates started to outperform their high school counterparts in college, research showed that the GED passing score of 150 was set too ambitiously so it was lowered to 145 just two years after the latest GED version was rolled out across the nation.
