Both exams give adults who couldn’t graduate high school one more chance to acquire an equivalent degree.
Testing takes place at a level similar to what HS seniors must command upon graduation.
Some GED students prefer to study for the GED exam under the guidance of a teacher at one of the physical locations listed in this post.
Others do perfectly well with an online course. This website’s free online GED classes help you decide if online learning suits you well. If so, we recommend you continue with Onsego GED Prep, a comprehensive online program that GED Testing Service recognizes as “Fully GED Test-Aligned.”

The computerized GED includes four subtests that measure a student’s knowledge of:
- English Language Literacy
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
These sub-exams may be completed separately and in your desired order.
The HiSET exam contains separate reading and writing tests, so five overall. These tests can be taken individually, too.
HiSET testing can be done on paper or on a computer, whereas the GED is entirely computer-based.
In the past, online HSE (High School Equivalency) testing was never an option. But now, online HiSET and GED testing options have been introduced. Read more below.

Launching Online GED and HiSET Testing Formats
It used to be that students looking to earn their high school equivalency (HSE) diplomas were always required to show up in person at an official Oklahoma HSE testing facility. There was never the option to deal with one of the exams online.
But now, this has all changed as we witnessed the introduction of online proctored HiSET and GED testing options.
To read all about this new online HiSET testing format, visit this page: ‘Introducing the online HiSET exam,’ and if you want to read more about the recently introduced GED online proctored test, check out this page: ‘Welcoming the online GED test.’
