Five HiSET subject tests

Iowa traded the GED program for the HiSET exam for the state’s High School Equivalency testing because the new GED was only available on a computer and the cost became too high. The HiSET, like the GED, measures knowledge at a level that graduating high school students must command, and subject areas covered are Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

No online HiSET option

Online HiSET or GED testing is NOT possible. If you want to earn your HSE diploma, you are required to show up at a state-certified HiSET testing site and sit for the exam in person. You may also benefit from this website’s free practice tests for your HiSET or GED exam.

Why the switch to the HiSET?

Iowa said goodbye to the GED in favor of the HiSET exam at the beginning of 2014. The state uses now the HiSET to assess HSE (high school equivalency) knowledge because the GED exam has become very expensive. On top of that, the GED exam was only available on a computer and the level was drastically raised.

The HiSET contains five separate subtests in the academic fields of language writing, language reading, math social studies, and science. If you want to pass the HiSET exam you need to score at least 8 points on each of the five subtests, your essay score must be at least a 2, and your total score needs to be in the 45-100 range.
