HiSET Qualification Requirements in Iowa

  • You must be at least 17 years old (unless you are granted an exception)
  • You must enroll in an Adult Education & Literacy program
  • You must complete the pre-CASAS Test in Math & Reading
  • If applicable, you must be referred to prep class enrollment
  • You must be successful on the OPT (Official Practice Test)
  • You must present a current photo ID on test day, have a social security number, and a “Verification for Testing” Form
  • To take the HiSET exam in Iowa, you need to have sufficient results on the HiSET practice test. To take this practice test, you need to be signed up for an adult education program from one of Iowa’s 15 community colleges.

HiSET Cost in Iowa

  • The entire HiSET exam costs $50.00 in Iowa for all five subject tests. This includes 2 free re-takes per subtest during a calendar year from your initial registration date.
  • One subject costs $10.00, but then you’ll have no free re-takes.
  • The Iowa High School Equivalency Diploma fee is $10.00.

HiSET Scoring

The five HiSET subtests are scored on a 1-20 scale, and to pass, the following applies:

  • Attain a score of no less than 8 on all five subject tests
  • Attain a score of no less than 2 (out of 6) on your essay
  • Attain a total score on the five subject tests of no less than 45, excluding the essay

The HiSET is a rather challenging exam. Getting optimally prepared is the key to success. The assessment measures knowledge in academic fields at a level comparable to that of graduating high school seniors.

The HiSET-at-Home Online Test

In the past, it was not possible to take the HiSET exam online. Your personal appearance at an official Iowa test facility was required if you were looking to secure a high school equivalency diploma.

Well, a few years ago, this changed with the arrival of an online testing option, the HiSET-At-Home exam. An online proctor will verify that everything is in line with strict regulations.

To learn more about taking the HiSET exam online, go to this page: ‘HiSET-At-Home online testing.’

You only qualify for both HiSET and GED testing if you have achieved passing scores on the official HiSET or GED practice test.

The GED Ready practice test is available at GED.com for $7.99 per test. There are four of these tests (one for each GED subtest), for a total of 4, so that’s an additional $32 on top of the testing fees.

Students with an Onsego Advantage Plan (available from $79) receive four GED Ready Vouchers at no additional cost. That’s included in their plan, a fine $32 bounus!

There are five HiSET Official Practice tests, since the exam has five subtests.
