It doesn’t matter when you left school.
The HiSET, in the same way as the GED®, is for adults who don’t hold a high school diploma and gives them one more chance to earn an equivalent degree.
The HiSET is a rather challenging exam. Getting optimally prepared is the key to success. The assessment measures knowledge in academic fields at a level that may be expected of graduating high school seniors.
There are five HiSET subtests in these subject fields:
- Language Writing
- Language Reading
- Social Studies
- Science
- Math
In the past, the HiSET, like the GED, couldn’t be taken online. You needed to show up in person at a state-designated testing center.

Introducing the HiSET-at-Home Online Testing Option
Until recently, it was not possible to take the HiSET exam online. Your personal appearance at an official Iowa test facility was required if you were looking to secure a high school equivalency diploma.
Now, this has changed with the arrival of an online testing option, the HiSET-At-Home exam. An online proctor will check if everything is in line with some pretty strict regulations. To learn more, go to ‘HiSET-At-Home online testing.’

- You must be at least 17 years old (unless you are granted exception)
- You must enroll in an Adult Education & Literacy program
