The GED and HiSET tests are available at state-certified test facilities and online. The exams provide adults who did not graduate from high school with the opportunity to obtain an equivalent credential.

Independent GED and HiSET Modules

The GED and HiSET have independent, modular subtests that can be taken one at a time in any chosen order. The four GED testing subject areas are

• Math
• Language (writing and reading combined)
• Science
• Social Studies

HiSET testing includes five subtests. Here, Language has individual reading and writing subtests. Both the HiSET and GED exams assess knowledge and skills at a level that compares to that of a high school graduate.

The GED test is only available on a computer, whereas the HiSET exam is offered on both paper and computer.

Online GED and HiSET Tests

In the past, taking the GED or HiSET test was only possible at state-designated testing sites. Online High School Equivalency (HSE) testing was simply not offered. To get hold of your Georgia HSE diploma, you had to report personally to an official Georgia test center.

But online GED and HiSET testing options were introduced, so that has changed. Students who take the online GED or HiSET exam will have an online proctor to help them through the process and check if all is in line with some pretty strict regulations.

To take the GED test online, you must first score “green” results on the official GED Ready test. Each GED sub-exam requires you to pass a GED Ready test first, so that’s four overall.
