Listed on this page are all GED prep classes and testing sites in the Jackson area. Mississippi uses two options for high school equivalency testing, the GED and HiSET.

The GED end HiSET tests can be taken in an online format and at state-approved Mississippi test facilities.

The GED® is entirely computer-formatted, while the HiSET® may be taken on paper or on a computer.

The assessments are for students who quit high school prematurely and give them another chance to obtain an equivalent degree.

Some students prefer to learn with a class at a physical site listed on this page. Other students may prepare with a good online GED prep course.

This website offers GED online classes for free and practice tests to help you decide if an online course fits you well, and if it does, you can continue with Onsego’s Online GED Prep Course, a program that GED Testing Service awards the predicate “100% aligned with the GED test.”

The GED includes four tests measuring a candidate’s academic proficiency in these subjects:

• Science
• Social Studies
• Math
• English Language Literacy

These modular sub-exams may be taken separately and in any desired order.

The HiSET exam has five tests (Literacy is split up into separate reading and writing tests) that may also be done separately.

Online HiSET or GED testing was, until quite recently, no option. Test takers needed to show up in person at an official Mississippi HSE test center. Recently, however, that has changed with the arrival of online GED and HiSET testing options. Check below for more information.

Online GED, HiSET Test-Taking Options

Until recently, you could not sit for the GED or HiSET exam over the Internet. You were always required to come, in person, to an official Mississippi HSE testing site. Well, that is no longer the case.

GED and HiSET Scoring

The purpose of the GED HiSET tests is to help individuals who haven’t finished their high school education. The HSE (high school equivalency) exam allows people to earn the necessary credentials to continue their academic education at a college or technical school and improve their options in the employment market.

After passing one of the two HSE exams, you will be awarded the Mississippi HSE diploma, which opens the doors toward a college education and will surely lead to improved employment chances.

The GED subtests are measured on a scale from 100 to 200 scale, and the passing score is 145 for each test. Averaging is not possible. The GED subtests (or modules) may take one at a time. The HiSET is also modular.

GED passing score: 145 (out of 200). HS equivalent score: 145-165. College-ready score: 165-175, and a score in the 175-200 range will also result in extra college credits.

HiSET passing score: 8 (out of a possible 20). Overall HiSET score (5 tests): at least 45. Essay minimum score: 2 (out of a possible 6).
