The exams are for adults who did not finish high school, and this way, they can earn a degree that’s equivalent to a high school diploma.

The GED has four separate tests (modules) in the subject fields of

  • Math
  • Science
  • English Language Literacy
  • Social Studies

You can take one GED module at a time. You don’t have to complete the four subtests in one testing session.

The HiSET comes with five sub-tests (Literacy is split up into reading and writing sections). These modules are also offered individually.

Online GED Classes

A simple and easy way of getting your GED diploma.

The GED must be done entirely on a computer, while the HiSET has computerized and paper-based formats.

In the past, online HiSET or GED testing was never an option. Testing needed to be done at official New Mexico testing sites.

Recently, we’ve seen new developments, though, with the introduction of online GED and HiSET testing options. You can read more below at the bottom of this post.

No longer are GED and HiSET testers required to complete the exams within three years.

Online GED and HiSET Testing Welcomed

Until just recently, taking the GED or HiSET exam online was not possible. The tests were simply not offered online. But now, the launch of online GED and HiSET tests has changed that.

To read more about the recently introduced HiSET-Exam-At-Home option, check out this article: ‘Introducing the online HiSET test,’ and if you want to learn more about the new online GED testing format, visit -> ‘The online GED test.’

*) New Mexico Junior College

The Adult Education Program provided by New Mexico Junior College offers morning and evening GED and HiSET prep classes. These classes are provided totally free of charge, including all study material, but please remember that the actual GED/HiSET exam is NOT free.

High School Equivalency preparation classes generally run from September through May each year, and there are five registration & orientation sessions for interested adults. These orientation sessions are in January, March, April, August, and October, always prior to the start of the GED or HiSET classes.

Returning GED (General Education Development) students must register for classes before classes start. GED/HiSET prep classes take place at the school’s Literacy Center on Dalmont Street. NMJC’s Adult Education Office is situated in the Ben Alexander Building (Room 205).

Candidates will be assessed for proper placement, and if you have no problems reading a regular high school textbook, if you can do basic math operations (fractions and decimals) without using a calculator, and if you have no problems writing a short letter (in English), you are all set to take the test to measure your level of academic education.

The HSE (High School Equivalency) course helps you find your strong and weak points so you can focus on learning the subjects that need your attention most. You will learn the essentials to be successful on the four tests of the GED exam: Literacy, Social Studies, Science, and Math, or the five HiSET tests. Upon completing the HSE classes, you really should have no problem with passing the GED or HiSET exam.

GED classes are available free of charge to adults 18 years of age and older, but 16 and 17-year-olds may also qualify if they have permission from their school district and if they provide signed parental consent.

Please beware that some GED test centers require proof that applicants completed a GED preparation course or that they passed the official GED Practice Test (GED Ready) before they allow them to take the GED tests. The school also offers ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, and the mandatory registration & orientation sessions for these classes are held in January and August.
