Mississippi offers multiple options for high school equivalency (HSE) testing, the GED, HiSET, and TASC.
HSE testing gives adults that dropped out of high school another chance to acquire an equivalent degree.
The HSE exam assesses basic knowledge at the level similar to that of high school grads.
The GED has four individual tests in the academic fields of Math, Literacy, Social Studies, and Science.
You can prepare for and take one GED subtest at a time and you are allowed two years time to complete the GED battery.
TASC and HiSET have individual reading and writing tests, so five in total that can also be taken separately.
The GED exam must be taken on a computer while the HiSET and TASC are offered in both on-paper and on-computer.
Online HiSET, GED, or TASC testing is not an option. Applicants must come to an official HSE testing center.

The HSE exam assesses basic competencies and knowledge at the level of high school grads. The GED (General Education Development) has four individual tests in the academic fields of Math, Literacy, Social Studies, and Science. You can prepare for and take one GED subtest at a time and you are allowed two years time to complete the GED battery. If you want to see if you qualify, go to GED in Mississippi.
GED passing score: 145. HS equivalency: 145-164. College-ready score: 165-174 and if your score is in the 174-200 range, you will also receive up to 20 college credits! TASC passing score: 500 out 800, and essay minimum: 2 points. HiSET passing score: 8 out of 20. Overall at least 45, and essay score at least 2 (out of 8).
GED passing score
Two years after implementation, the GED passing score lowered to 145. Read all about this significant step here. TASC and HiSET results are scored in their own ways. You may also want to take a closer look at this page that includes links to all GED programs and test sites in the US. Please note that online HiSET, TASC, or GED testing must be done at one of Mississippi’s official HSE testing centers. Online HSE testing is NOT possible.
The four GED tests
ABE/HSE classes are offered all across Mississippi and the GED exam includes tests in the four content areas of Math (115 minutes); Literacy (155 minutes); Science (90 minutes), and Social Studies (70 minutes). The HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) and TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) come with separate writing and reading tests so five in total.
The four GED modules can be taken individually within two years. The HiSET and TASC are modular as well. So you can prepare for, pay for, and take one of the GED subtests at a time. No longer do you need to take the entire GED battery in one go. This is a great improvement compared to the old system.
For registration go to GED.com and sign up with MyGED, a web-based portal that will take you perfectly through every step of the way to your GED diploma.

*) Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
MGCCC provides ABE (Adult Basic Education) courses for adults who never completed their regular high school education, and also don’t have another secondary education credential. HSE prep classes are available on the school’s campuses in Jackson, George, Harrison, and Stone counties. Gulf Coast’s ABE program offers adults the chance to attend classes that will prepare them optimally to sit for the GED (General Education Development), HiSET, or TASC exam with confidence.
These classes will improve their knowledge of, and their competencies in, the subject fields of math, literacy, social studies, and science. Holders of the HSE diploma are expected to earn 42 percent more than non-HSE diploma holders in their entire careers. Persons who have an HSE diploma are much more likely to secure a well-paying job and keep it! The HSE exam can be taken at MGCCC’s Jefferson Davis Campus, Perkinston Campus, Jackson County Campus, and the George County Center.
**) Goodwill Industries of South Mississippi
Not having a secondary education is a huge obstacle for many young adults who dropped out of high school. Not holding an HSE diploma can prevent them from getting a good job, they cannot go to college, not even join the military. Goodwill Industries of South Mississippi offers help. They provide a program that supports you to get your HSE diploma, and, just like most HSE prep classes, they are free!
HSE prep classes are targeted toward young adults who failed school, dropped out, or for another reason had to quit high school prematurely. Once they are out of school, they stay out. The only thing they can do get their HSE diploma, and if they won’t achieve that, all doors will remain closed. Yet, if they get the credential, closed doors will become open doors.
They now have the option to go to college, join the military, or go to a trade school. They now can get well-paying jobs, all options are on the table. This program offers them a second chance to realize better opportunities. Before applicants can partake in these classes they will have to take a pre-test. This way can be seen what their level of education is.
***) Gulf Coast Action Agency
Gulf Coast Action Agency’s “Working on Winning GED Program” is offered at no charge to adults aged 16-21 who want to earn their GED diploma. The program’s classes are self-paced, and students are required to study independently and they can do so at their own pace. The agency uses the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) system for learning all about the four GED exam topics: math, science, social studies, and literacy.
Additionally, students get an education to develop their skills on job searching, they will learn how to do a job interview, how to write a resume, how to develop work ethics, and so on. Applicants must also participate in the agency’s Job Shadowing Program, and classes are held Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. till Noon. GED preparation classes are available in George, Stone, and Hancock counties. Please call Gulf Coast Action Agency’s locations for further information: 601-766-0730.
