The GED and HiSET Subtests
The GED is fully computer-formatted and contains four separate subtests (independent modules) covering the academic areas of
- English Language Arts
- Social Studies
- Science
- Mathematics
You have the option to complete the four GED modules (subtests) individually and in your desired order.
The HiSET exam includes five testing sections (separate language writing and language reading tests) that are also modular.
The HiSET can be taken on paper and computer, whereas the GED is fully computerized. In Illinois, applicants must also pass a Constitution Test.

Constitution Test
GED testers looking to earn their High School Equivalency Certificates in Illinois must also take and pass the state’s Constitution Test in addition to passing the HiSET or GED exam. The Illinois Constitution Test is administered at many schools and test centers, and there’s no fee associated with the test.
Illinois awards high school diplomas to successful GED and HiSET test-takers, and the GED test is now available at no charge as well.
Online GED, HiSET Exams
In the past, taking the GED or HiSET exam online was not possible. The tests were simply not offered over the Internet. If you wished to get hold of your high school equivalency diploma, you needed to appear at a state-designated testing site and sit for the tests in person.
Fortunately, that has now changed. Both the GED and the HiSET have introduced online options. For detailed information, go to these posts: ‘The online GED test,’ and for HiSET information, go to ‘The HiSET at Home test.’
In case you consider taking the GED test from home, please note that to qualify for online testing, you’ll first need to reach “green” zone scores on the GED Ready test. Since there’s a corresponding GED Ready test for each GED subtest, you’ll need to pass four of these GED Ready tests.
This practice test is $7.99, adding $32 to your total testing costs. Students learning for their GED with an Advantage Plan from Onsego will receive four GED Ready test vouchers for free. That is included in their plan, a fine $32 bonus, don’t you agree?
