Four Independent GED Tests
The GED has four subtests (independent modules) that measure knowledge of these areas:
- English Language Literacy
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
You have the option to complete these four modules one at a time and in any desired order.
The HiSET exam contains five subtests, as Literacy comes with a reading and a writing test. The HiSET tests can be taken separately as well.
The HiSET is offered in both paper-based and computerized formats, whereas the GED is offered exclusively on a computer.

Online GED and HiSET Tests
Taking the GED or HiSET exam online was, until some years back, not possible. The exams were just not offered via the Internet. The introduction, however, of online proctored GED and HiSET tests has changed that.
To learn all about the newly launched HiSET-At-Home online exam, check out this post: ‘The Online HiSET test,’ and to learn all about the online proctored GED test, visit this post: ‘The Online GED Test.’
To be able to take the GED test online, candidates first have to attain passing scores on the official GED Ready test. For each GED subtest, there’s a GED Ready test, so four in total, that cost $7.99 on the GED.com website.
Students who learn with Onsego using an Advantage Plan will receive four GED Ready tests for free as their plan includes four vouchers for these practice tests, a $32 value!
Should we list or remove a location? Are adjustments needed? We welcome your advice here.
