Independent HiSET and GED Subtests

The HiSET exam has five separate subtests measuring a candidate’s proficiency in the fields of

  • English Writing
  • English Reading
  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science

The GED exam combines English Reading and English Writing into one Language Arts subtest, so there are four separate GED subject tests.

The HiSET and GED sub-exams are independent modules. You can write them in any order and, if you wish, one at a time.

The HiSET exam, just like the GED, measures knowledge at a level that compares to that of high school students upon graduation.

The minimum GED score is 145 out of 200 on each subtest. Averaging is no option, so your total GED score must be at least 580 overall.

The minimum score on each of the five HiSET subtests is 8 (out of 20), your overall score must be at least 45, and your essay result can’t be lower than two (out of six).

GED Scoring

The four GED modules (independent sub-exams) are calibrated on a 100-200 scoring scale. There are four ranges:

  • 100-144 = below passing GED scores
  • 145-164 = high school equivalent GED scores
  • 165-174 = college-ready GED scores
  • 175-200 = college-ready plus college credit GED scores

Online GED and HiSET Testing

In earlier days, taking the GED and HiSET exams online was not available. If you wanted to secure your Indiana HiSET or GED credential, you needed to take the exams at an official state-designated testing site.

These days, that has changed as both tests have introduced online versions. If you want to read more about online GED testing, visit ‘The Online Proctored GED Test,’ and for more information about the online HiSET exam, visit ‘The Online Proctored HiSET Test.’

To qualify for online GED testing, you must first achieve satisfactory results on the GED Ready test, and since each GED subtest requires you to pass a corresponding GED Ready test, you need to pass four of these tests.

You can buy the GED Ready test at GED.com, and each test costs $7.99, adding $32 to your total GED testing cost.

Students who register with Onsego and learn with an Advantage Plan are lucky, as these plans come with four GED Ready vouchers at no extra cost, an incredible $32 bonus!
