This page lists all GED prep class locations and testing facilities in the Elko region. Nevada uses two exams for High School Equivalency testing, the GED and HiSET.

Great Basin College-Elko Adult Education

Great Basin College has switched from the GED to HiSET. The HiSET exam is more affordable than the GED exam, which is only available in computer format, while the HiSET exam is offered both on a computer and on paper.
High school equivalency instruction is offered in Elko, Owyhee, Pahrump, West Wendover, and Winnemucca.
The Elko Adult Education Center also offers the Adult High School Diploma Program, which Great Basin College supports together with the Elko County School District. Great Basin College offers HiSET instruction in Elko and Owyhee.

The Modular GED and HiSET Subtests
The GED includes four individual modules (subtests) in the subject fields of
- Literacy (Language Arts)
- Science
- Social Studies
- Math
You may take the GED subtests one at a time and in your preferred order.
HiSET testing includes five subtests (writing and reading are separate tests) that may also be taken one at a time and in any order.
GED and HiSET testing align with the level of knowledge required of high school seniors upon graduation.
The HiSET is offered in a paper-and-pencil and a computer-based format, whereas the GED is only available on a computer.

Online GED and HiSET Testing
In the past, the GED and HiSET exams were exclusively offered at state-approved Nevada HSE testing facilities. There was simply no online option available.
That changed a few years ago, however, with the launch of online testing options for both the HiSET and GED exams.

To be able to take the GED test online, you’ll first need to achieve passing scores on the GED Ready test, the official practice test from GED Testing Service.
There’s one of these practice tests for each GED subtest, so that’s four in total, which will add $32 to your total testing costs ($7.99 per practice test).
