The exams assess proficiency at a level that equals that of graduating HS students.
In New Jersey, both options must be taken on a computer; paper-based testing is no longer possible.
The GED has four individual tests that measure a test-taker’s proficiency in the following fields:
- English Language Arts
- Social Studies
- Mathematics
- Science
These subtests are independent modules that can be completed separately and in any desired order.

The HiSET exam comes with five subtests as their literacy part has separate writing and reading tests. These tests can be taken individually as well.
The New Jersey high school equivalency (HSE) credential is accepted just like a regular high school diploma by educational institutions and employers.
In the past, online HiSET or GED testing was not possible. However, this has now changed with the introduction of online HiSET and GED exams. Read more below.

Launching GED and HiSET Online Options
Taking the GED or HiSET exam over the Internet was, until just recently, no option. You had to come personally to one of New Jersey’s state-designated HSE testing sites and take the tests there. Now, all of this has changed with the introduction of online HiSET and GED test-taking options.
To read more about the HiSET-At-Home exam via the Internet, visit ‘Launching the online HiSET exam,’ and if you want to read more about the recently launched online proctored GED exam, go to this post: ‘Introducing the online GED test.’
