GED Classes Durham, North Carolina

Last Updated on April 11, 2024.

This page contains a full listing of GED prep classes and testing sites in the Durham area. North Carolina offers two options for high school equivalency testing: the GED and HISET.

Both the GED and HiSET exams are offered online and at state-approved HSE (High School Equivalency) test centers. To learn more about the newly launched HiSET® and GED® online testing options, go to the bottom of this post.

The exams give individuals who never graduate high school an extra chance to obtain an equivalent degree.

Testing takes place at a level similar to what students must know upon graduating high school.

The GED contains four separate tests measuring a candidate’s academic proficiency in the subjects of

  • English Language Literacy
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Math

You can write these four modules (separate, independent sub-exams) one at a time if you wish, and in any order.

The HiSET comes with individual writing and reading tests, so five overall, that can be taken separately, too.

The HiSET exam is offered on a computer and on paper, while the GED is fully computer-based.

Launching Online HiSET and GED Exams

The HiSET and GED exams were, until recently, not offered online. To secure your North Carolina High School Equivalency diploma, you had to report personally to one of North Carolina’s official HSE testing centers.

Fortunately, the arrival of online HiSET and GED tests has now changed all of that. For more information about online GED testing, go to ‘The online GED test,’ and for information about the online HiSET exam, visit ‘The online HiSET exam.’
