Until 2021, West Virginia used the TASC exam for high school equivalency testing, but this exam was discontinued. Recently, the state decided to use both the HiSET® and GED® exams for its HSE (High School Equivalency) testing program.

HiSET testing occurs via five subtests that measure knowledge and skills in these subjects:

- Science
- Language Writing
- Language Reading
- Social Studies
The GED test has four sub-exams as the Writing and Reading portions were combined into one Language Arts sub-exam. Both exams measure knowledge at the same level that is expected of graduating HS seniors.

West Virginia pays for high school equivalency testing, so it is only available to state residents.
The West Virginia HiSET and GED exams must be done entirely in a computerized format.
Both exams can be taken online (only by qualifying candidates) and at official test centers! The state does not offer the exams online.
You have the option to deal with the GED and HiSET subtests individually. Earlier TASC scores can be transferred to the HiSET or GED exam.

HiSET Passing Score
On the HiSET exam, you must come to a score in the 8-20 range on each of the five HiSET subtests. The tests are scored on a 1-20 scale, and your overall score must be at least 45, while your essay cannot score under two points (out of six). So, the passing score on each subtest is 8, and averaging is not possible.
GED Scoring
The four GED modules are scored on a 100 to 200 scale where 145 is the passing score. Scores in the 145-164 range indicate high school equivalent results, scores in the 165-174 range indicate college-readiness, and scores in the 275-200 range additionally result in up to 10 college credits.
