What’s on the HiSET and GED Exams

The five HiSET testing subject fields are:

• Language Reading
• Language Writing
• Math
• Science
• Social Studies

The GED test has four subtests, as the Reading and Writing sections have been combined into one “Reasoning through Language Arts” subtest.

You can write the HiSET and GED sub-exams individually and in any preferred order. There’s no need to take the full exams in one sitting.

Both exams assess proficiency at a level that compares to that of high school seniors upon graduation.

West Virginia requires test-takers to take the five HiSET or four GED subtests in a computerized format unless they have an accommodation to take the exam on paper.

HiSET Passing Score

The HiSET exam requires you to score between 8 and 20 points on each of the five HiSET subtests. Your overall score must be at least 45, and your essay score must be no less than 2 out of a possible 6.

So, the passing score on each of the five subtests is 8. Averaging is not possible, so that score is minimally required on each of the five HiSET subtests.

GED Passing Score

Your GED results are scored on a scale from 100 to 200. On each of the four GED modules, you must score at least 145 points.

Scores in the 145-164 range indicate high school equivalency. Scores in the 165-174 range indicate college readiness. Scores in the 175-200 range are college-ready PLUS credit results.

Online GED Test

In earlier days, taking the GED exam online was no option. To earn your GED, you needed to show up in person at one of West Virginia’s official test center.

But in many states, that changed with the advent of the online GED exam some years back. In West Virginia, however, online GED testing is not allowed.

You may, however, be eligible to write the GED exam online in another state that has no residency requirement.

To qualify for online GED testing, you are required to achieve sufficient scores (in the ‘green’ zone) on the official practice test GED Ready.
