The exams give adults who didn’t graduate high school an extra option to earn an equivalent degree. Testing occurs at a level comparable to that of graduating HS students.
The GED is fully computer-formatted, while the HiSET is available in paper- and computer-based versions.
This website provides free online GED classes and practice tests so you can discover if learning with an online program is the right thing for you. Some GED students do better if they learn at one of the facilities listed below, while others perform perfectly well if they use an online course.
If working with an online program is a good fit for you, we suggest you go ahead with Onsego GED Prep. an online course that the GED publisher, GED Testing Service®, qualifies as “fully aligned to the GED Test.”
Online GED Classes
A simple and easy way of getting your GED diploma.
The GED exam includes four individual tests covering the academic subjects of
- English Language (writing and reading combined)
- Mathematics
- Science, incl. Chemistry, Scientific Processes, Physics
- Social Studies, incl. Geography, History
You have the liberty to complete these subtests one test at a time if you wish and in any order.
The HiSET has five tests (Literacy has individual writing and reading tests) that can be taken separately as well.
In the past, online HiSET or GED testing was not an option. Test-takers needed to show up at an official New Mexico HSE testing site.
This has changed recently, however, with the introduction of online proctored HiSET and GED testing options. Read more at the bottom of this post.

Online GED and HiSET Options
Taking the HiSET or GED exam in an online format was, until recently, not possible. You needed to show up in person at one of New Mexico’s official HSE test centers. Now, however, with the arrival of online GED and HiSET test-taking options, this has changed.
To learn all about the newly launched online HiSET-Exam-At-Home option, you can visit this page: ‘The online HiSET test welcomed,’ and if you want to read all about the online proctored GED test, check out this page: ‘Introducing the online GED exam.’
New Mexico no longer requires test-takers to complete the HiSET or GED exam within a 3-year period of time.
