In the period from 2014 through 2021, New York State was using the TASC assessment for high school equivalency (HSE) testing, but this was discontinued at the end of 2021. Your TASC passing scores are also good for the GED test!

The GED (General Education Development) exam includes four sub-exams that cover these subject fields:

  • Language Arts (writing and reading combined)
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social studies

The four GED subtests are entirely computer-based. There is no paper-based GED testing option, but you can take the four tests one at a time if you want.

In New York State, GED testing is free for state residents. The state picks up the tab for its residents as one of only four states.

The GED exam assesses knowledge and skills at a level that compares to what high school seniors are supposed to command upon graduation.

You can sit for the NY GED exam only at an official GED testing center. Online testing is not available in New York State.
