The Four GED Sub-exams

The GED (General Education Development) exam includes four sub-exams that cover these subject fields:

• Language Arts (writing and reading combined)
• Math
• Science
• Social studies

The four GED subtests are entirely computer-based. There is no paper-based GED testing option; however, you can take the four tests one at a time, in any preferred order.

The GED exam assesses knowledge and skills at a level that compares to what high school seniors are supposed to know upon graduation.

Online GED Test 

The State of New York does not offer the GED exam online, but you may be eligible to take the GED exam online in a state that has no residency requirements.

In that case, note that you must first score green (likely to pass) on the GED Ready test. There are four GED Ready tests to pass (one for each GED sub-exam), so that’s four of these tests.

The GED Ready tests cost $7.99 each on GED.com, which adds $32 to the testing fees that apply in the state where you take the online GED test.
