The exams provide adult learners without a high school diploma the opportunity to secure an education credential that’s equivalent to a standard high school diploma.

Modular GED and HiSET Sub-exams

GED testing occurs through four individual, modular sub-exams measuring proficiency in these academic areas:

• Mathematics
• Social Studies
• Science
• English Language Arts

The HiSET consists of five subtests: Language Reading, Language Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Math.

Testing is done at a level that closely compares to what students must master when they graduate from high school.

You need around 7.5 hours to deal with the entire GED or HiSET exam, but you can choose to deal with the five modules individually and in your preferred order.

The HiSET can be taken on paper or in a computer-formatted version, while the GED exam is fully computerized.

Online GED and HiSET Testing

Until a few years back, online GED or HiSET testing was not possible. You were required to show up at one of Missouri’s state-approved HSE test centers.

But a few years ago, we saw the launch of the online HiSET or GED exams. An online proctor helps you with the online testing process and checks whether you do it correctly.

You only qualify for the online GED test after you have achieved passing scores on the GED Ready test. This applies to all GED subtests. So, that’s four GED Ready tests in total.

One GED Ready test costs $7.99, so that will add another $32 on top of your Missouri testing fees.
