Online GED and HiSET Testing

You can now sit for the HiSET and GED exams online as well. Until recently, online HiSET or GED testing was no option. That was simply not offered. Test-takers had to come, in person, to a state-designated testing site. That has now changed.

Today, the GED and HiSET exams are also available in an online, proctored format. To learn more about this development, visit ‘The online HiSET,’ and for GED information, check out; ‘Online GED testing.’

High School Equivalency Diploma

The California HSE (High School Equivalency) diploma, earned through the GED or HiSET test, is equivalent to a standard high school diploma, and all across the nation recognized and accepted as such.

Testing centers decide which HSE exam(s) they will use, so be wise and check the options offered at a test center near you. The HiSET exam includes five testing subject fields (reading, writing, science, math, and social studies) and is still offered both on a computer and on paper, whereas the GED exam with four subtests is available only in a computer-based format.

GED Passing Score

The GED exam is scored on a 100-200 points scale, and you are required to score at least 145 on each individual test. Averaging is not possible, so your overall score (four tests) needs to be no less than 580.

Scoring is as follows: 145-164: high school equivalency passing score; 165-174: college-ready passing score; 175-200: college-ready + college credit score.

The five HiSET sub-exams are scored on a 0-20 scale, and the passing score on each subtest is 8. Your total score must be at least 45, excluding your easy, which must yield at least a 2-score (out of 6).
