Washington State is using the GED exam for its high school equivalency (HSE) testing program.

The HSE program offers adults who left high school prematurely the chance to earn an equivalent degree.

The HSE test measures knowledge at a level similar to what graduating HS students must command.

The GED has four subject tests that can be taken independently in a period of maximally two years.

These subtests, or modules, cover the academic fields of social studies, literacy, science, and math.

GED testing over the internet is not possible. Test-takers must come in person to an official GED testing site

The GED passing standards were lowered by 5 points to 145 in early 2016. To learn all about this crucial move, check out this interesting GED News page. Online GED testing is NOT an option. You are required to show up at one of Washington’s state-approved GED testing centers and take the four subtests personally within two years after your first registration.

*) South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) provides free GED preparation classes in the Thurston County Jail to allow inmates the opportunity to earn their GED (General Education Development) diploma while incarcerated. This GED program was launched here in 1996, and over the last decade, it almost 300 inmates graduated from the GED program. When the inmates are sufficiently prepared, SPSCC’s Testing Center comes to the jail to administers the four GED tests.

The success of the program lies in the cooperation of various departments, the school’s Adult Basic Education and Testing Center, Thurston County’s Correctional Institution, and also Thurston County Commissioners, as they fund half of the program’s costs such as student tuition and testing fees. The other half of the expenses are paid by SPSCC.
