Florida uses the GED test for high school equivalency (HSE) testing.

HSE testing offers persons who could not graduate high school the chance to obtain an equivalent degree.

The GED exam measures knowledge at the level that can be expected of graduating high school students.

The exam includes four independent subtests in math, science, literacy, and social studies. You must finish these subtests within two years.

Online GED testing is NO option. You must come to an official Florida GED testing center in person and don’t forget to bring a proper ID.

Free GED Study Guide

For who is the GED program?

The totally upgraded and entirely computer-based GED (General Education Development) exam is for people who did not complete high school and gives them another chance to obtain a similar diploma. The certificate that you will receive after successfully finishing the Florida GED exam is accepted all over the nation as equivalent to a normal high school degree by business employers and academic institutions.

The upgraded GED exam

The GED testing system needed to be brought in conformance with a common high school degree, and the 7.5-hour long test was totally revised a few years way back. This time the overhaul was very substantial and the most demanding modification in the existence of the GED program. Successful test takers will be far better ready for the modern employment market and for following college and university courses. The bar was raised, the education level reflects higher standards, and is in line again with requirements of contemporary industries.

The totally overhauled GED exam guarantees again that GED diploma holders have knowledge and skills that are developed in a way and at a level comparable to the average high school graduate. People who now complete the GED test are sure to have the necessary background to attend college and this was something that had been difficult in the past.

The GED – what’s new

GED test-takers are required to take the high school equivalency exam in a computer-based format, a paper-based version is not available anymore. The latest version of the GED test is more rigorous and more expensive than the former version. The content was aligned with the Common Core State Standards, so the new GED test addresses far better the knowledge and skills required by colleges and industry.

The former GED exam version was introduced many years ago and it was high time the exam was updated to keep up with modern academic standards. The new test series is available in English and Spanish and includes four content subtests because the reading and writing sections were combined into one literacy (Reasoning Through Language Arts) section.

The four tests cost almost twice the amount of the former paper version, which could be an issue for some people. Florida requires schools to charge $30 per term for GED preparation programs, and the fee for the exam is $128 ($32 per test). There is no requirement to take all four tests (or modules) in a row.

Your test scores will remain valid for two years from the moment of your first registration so you can prepare (and pay) for one section and when taken successfully, move ahead to the next part.

Online GED testing?

While preparing for the GED exam can be done perfectly well via online GED programs, the actual tests are NOT offered over the internet. You must show up at one of Florida’s official testing sites, and please don’t forget to bring proper identification!

There are a number of internet sites that claim they can provide the GED exam and/or the GED diploma online, but these sites are fraudulent. Their so-called tests and diplomas are worthless and the documents they issue will not be accepted by colleges, universities, and employers. Don’t get ripped off!

*) West Area Adult School

West Area Adult School offers GED classes to assist you with passing the GED exam. Students who take the GED exam successfully will receive the state-issued Florida High School Diploma.

This document allows you to go on to a career or vocational education center, enter college or university, join the armed forces, and get well-paying employment.

The school’s GED classes are set up for adults who are 18 years and older (but 16 and 17-year-olds can also be eligible if they have an age waiver and parental consent). Applicants must not already have a secondary education degree, and not be engaged in another school program.

The four tests of the GED exam are in Science, Social Studies, Literacy, and Math. Applicants will receive an individualized study program in accordance with their needs, and the course includes computer lessons as well. The school features highly motivated and experienced teachers who are trained for adult education.

The school offers days and evening classes at its main campus site and at other convenient locations in its service area.
